Telly Unlocks Programmatic Ad Buying for its Unique Smart TV Home Screen Experience, Aiming to Set Industry Standards

San Francisco, CA – September 9th, 2026 – Telly, the innovative startup renowned for distributing free smart TVs in exchange for user data and advertising exposure, is significantly expanding its advertising capabilities by making its distinct home screen ad inventory available for programmatic purchase. This strategic move, coupled with Telly’s active engagement in establishing industry standards, signals a concerted effort to attract greater advertising spend and solidify its position in the burgeoning connected TV (CTV) landscape.

The Telly smart TV experience is characterized by its dual-screen setup. While the main screen displays viewer content, a smaller, secondary screen positioned below it continuously showcases news updates and advertisements. It is within this secondary screen that Telly is now enabling programmatic home screen ads. The company leverages Magnite’s SpringServe ad server for ad delivery, with demand actively being generated from prominent demand-side platforms (DSPs) such as The Trade Desk and Teads, among others.

Mike Shehan, Telly’s Chief Revenue Officer, emphasized the critical role of programmatic enablement in achieving the necessary scale for home screen ads to gain traction. Shehan, a seasoned executive with prior experience as the CEO of SpotX, a video supply-side platform acquired by Magnite for a substantial $1.17 billion in 2021, brings considerable expertise to Telly’s commercial strategy. He articulated that for Telly’s unique ad offering to become a significant player, it must be accessible and efficient for advertisers, which programmatic buying inherently provides.

While Telly is not the first to introduce programmatic home screen advertising, its approach is differentiated by a strong commitment to standardization. Ad tech platforms like Nexxen have also made their native home screen ads programmatically available across various TV manufacturers, including V (formerly VIDAA) and TiVo, since last year. Furthermore, supply-side platforms, including Magnite, have offered programmatic access to ad formats like pause ads for some time.

Telly’s distinct contribution lies in its close collaboration with the IAB Tech Lab, a key organization for digital advertising standards. The company has been instrumental in working towards the creation of standardized specifications for home screen ads within the bidstream. The IAB Tech Lab concluded its public comment period for proposed spec updates at the end of June 2026, and subsequently finalized these signal updates in July. This proactive involvement underscores Telly’s ambition to not only participate in but also help shape the future of CTV advertising formats.

Shehan further asserted that Telly’s proprietary second screens and its access to valuable first-party customer data provide a distinct advantage in targeting home screen ads with greater precision and ultimately driving measurable business results for advertisers. This combination of innovative ad placements and rich data insights positions Telly as a compelling proposition in the increasingly competitive CTV market.

The "Go Big or Go Home Screen" Strategy: Data-Rich Targeting and Nondisruptive Placements

The foundation of Telly’s unique value proposition for advertisers is built upon the extensive data it collects from its users. When individuals sign up to receive a Telly device, they are required to complete a comprehensive questionnaire. This survey delves deeply into demographic information, including household income and the number of residents, as well as lifestyle and behavioral data. Questions cover brand preferences, insurance providers, the types of vehicles owned by household members, and whether these vehicles are leased or purchased.

"The questionnaire goes very deep on demographics, lifestyle, and brand loyalty," Shehan explained. This rich dataset, when integrated with Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) data, which reveals the content viewers are consuming, enables highly sophisticated targeting capabilities. For instance, Telly can identify and target households that are actively in the market for new insurance policies, a level of granularity that is difficult to achieve through traditional advertising channels.

The Telly second screen transcends its role as a mere data collection interface. Its ability to operate independently of the main screen allows for the seamless integration of advertisements without interrupting the primary viewing experience. This is particularly valuable for reaching consumers who opt for ad-free streaming services on their main screens, providing advertisers with an alternative touchpoint.

Beyond programmatic enablement, Telly is also introducing longer-form home screen ads, up to five minutes in duration, available through private marketplace deals facilitated by Magnite. Shehan highlighted that this extended ad length, combined with the non-intrusive nature of a home screen placement, significantly enhances engagement.

A compelling case in point is a recent campaign for an unnamed streaming service. Telly reported that a five-minute home screen ad resulted in five times more app opens compared to a two-minute ad for the same service. This suggests that when placed appropriately and offered in a context that doesn’t disrupt viewing, longer ad formats can yield superior results.

Industry Recognition and Future Outlook

The potential of the home screen as an advertising real estate is gaining recognition among media buyers. Mike Treon, Head of CTV and Video Strategy at PMG, commented on the effectiveness of this approach: "The home screen has always been a powerful front door for us to engage viewers. Telly extends that opportunity, giving brands a persistent presence that enhances engagement." This sentiment reflects a growing understanding that the initial point of interaction with a smart TV offers a prime opportunity for brand visibility and consumer connection.

However, the true test for Telly and the broader home screen advertising category will be whether this initial enthusiasm translates into sustained, long-term investment from advertisers. The ability to demonstrate consistent return on investment (ROI) and to scale these campaigns across a significant portion of Telly’s user base will be crucial for its continued growth and for solidifying its place in the CTV advertising ecosystem.

The strategic alliance with Magnite, a leader in programmatic advertising technology, is a key enabler for Telly’s ambitions. Magnite’s extensive network and expertise in ad serving and monetization are vital for Telly to effectively manage and optimize its ad inventory. The partnership allows Telly to tap into a sophisticated infrastructure, ensuring that its programmatic offerings are competitive and appealing to a wide range of advertisers.

The ongoing work with the IAB Tech Lab on standardization is also a critical factor. As the CTV landscape matures, advertisers and agencies increasingly demand transparency, consistency, and measurable outcomes. By actively participating in the development of industry standards, Telly is positioning itself as a forward-thinking player that prioritizes the needs of the advertising ecosystem. This commitment to standardization can reduce friction in the buying process, making it easier for DSPs and agencies to integrate Telly’s inventory into their campaigns.

The unique data Telly collects is a significant differentiator. In an era where consumer privacy is paramount, Telly’s model of obtaining explicit consent for data collection through its user agreement and detailed questionnaires provides a more transparent and potentially more privacy-compliant approach compared to some other CTV data strategies. This focus on user consent could become increasingly important as regulatory scrutiny of data practices intensifies.

The future trajectory of Telly’s home screen advertising will likely depend on several factors: the continued growth of its user base, the effectiveness of its data-driven targeting capabilities in delivering demonstrable results for advertisers, and its ability to further influence industry standards for CTV ad formats. If Telly can successfully navigate these challenges, it has the potential to redefine how brands engage with consumers on the primary interface of their smart TVs, offering a novel and potentially highly effective avenue for advertising. The company’s proactive stance on standardization and its unique data model suggest a thoughtful and strategic approach to carving out a significant niche in the evolving world of connected television advertising.
