Onetag Acquires Italian Creative Ad Tech Platform Aryel to Enhance Sell-Side Curation and AI-Driven Optimization

Monday, March 2nd, 2026 – 3:00 am

In a strategic move to solidify its position in the increasingly competitive programmatic advertising landscape, Onetag, a global ad exchange and curation platform headquartered in Italy, announced on Monday the acquisition of Aryel, an innovative Italian creative ad tech company specializing in interactive ad formats. This acquisition marks Onetag’s first-ever M&A activity and is poised to significantly bolster its sell-side curation solutions, providing advertisers with more sophisticated tools for creative customization, testing, and ultimately, driving enhanced campaign performance. The integration of Aryel’s technology is also a crucial step in Onetag’s development of a new AI-based deal optimization engine, slated for release at the end of the month.

The burgeoning trend of supply-path optimization (SPO) has placed considerable pressure on Supply-Side Platforms (SSPs) to demonstrate their value beyond being mere conduits for ad inventory. This imperative has fueled the growth of sell-side curation initiatives, where platforms actively manage and package inventory to offer greater transparency, efficiency, and performance to buyers. Onetag’s acquisition of Aryel directly addresses this market dynamic, equipping its existing Smart Curation platform with advanced capabilities for creative manipulation and interactive ad development.

Onetag’s Strategic Evolution: From DSP to Curation Pioneer

Onetag’s journey in the ad tech ecosystem began in 2015 as a Demand-Side Platform (DSP). However, recognizing the evolving needs of the market and the critical role of publisher-centric solutions, the company pivoted to develop a performance-focused SSP. This strategic shift was initially geared towards serving the demanding requirements of global consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble, before being scaled globally in 2020.

In 2022, Onetag launched its proprietary sell-side curation platform, Smart Curation, as a deliberate strategy to differentiate itself from other SSPs. "The curation market has become crowded with non-differentiated middlemen," explained Filippo Gramigna, Onetag’s co-CEO, in a statement to AdExchanger. "The best way to stand out in this increasingly crowded market is to make it easy for advertisers of all sizes to get started with curation and create their own deal IDs."

Aryel’s technology directly addresses this objective by simplifying the adaptation of existing creative assets into programmatic-ready formats. The platform is adept at reformatting creative materials to seamlessly integrate with standard IAB banner sizes and online video specifications, thus lowering the barrier to entry for advertisers seeking to leverage programmatic channels.

The Power of Interactive Creative in Programmatic Advertising

Aryel’s specialization in interactive creative further complements Onetag’s existing curated marketplace, which boasts approximately 50,000 high-impact ad units sourced through more than 2,000 direct publisher connections. The synergy between Onetag’s curated inventory and Aryel’s creative capabilities is expected to unlock new levels of campaign effectiveness.

"Placing interactive ads within already high-performing ad slots should make those placements even more effective at driving outcomes," Gramigna elaborated. He cited a specific example of Aryel’s "try it on" creative format, which is particularly beneficial for apparel and accessories brands. An eyewear brand, for instance, could utilize this format to allow potential customers to virtually try on different frames using their device’s camera. Crucially, this interactive experience is designed to function entirely within a standard IAB banner, enabling users to engage without leaving the publisher’s website, thereby minimizing friction and maximizing conversion potential.

Beyond traditional display and video, Aryel has also been actively experimenting with interactive formats for AI chatbot interfaces. This forward-thinking approach positions Onetag to tap into emerging advertising opportunities within the rapidly expanding realm of conversational AI platforms. The integration of these capabilities is anticipated to provide advertisers with novel ways to engage consumers within these new digital frontiers.

Financials and Integration: A New Chapter for Onetag

The collaboration between Onetag and Aryel began approximately 18 months prior to the acquisition, a period during which their successful working relationship paved the way for this strategic consolidation. The decision to pursue the acquisition was further supported by Onetag’s largest shareholder, Wise Equity, underscoring the confidence in the combined entity’s future growth prospects.

While the specific financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, Gramigna confirmed that the deal has been finalized. He also revealed that the combined company achieved $70 million in net revenue based on the previous year’s performance. This substantial revenue figure highlights the significant market presence and operational scale of the merged entity.

In addition to gaining exclusive access to Aryel’s sophisticated creative technology, Onetag is integrating all of Aryel’s 45 employees into its workforce, bringing the total headcount to approximately 130 professionals. The four co-founders of Aryel will assume leadership roles within Onetag. Notably, Aryel’s CEO, Mattia Salvi, will take on the newly created position of Chief Growth Officer and Head of Go-to-Market, signaling a strong focus on expanding market reach and driving revenue.

The logistical integration of the two companies is expected to be relatively smooth. Both Onetag and Aryel are based in Italy, with Aryel’s operational hub located approximately an hour’s drive from Onetag’s tech center in Tuscany. This geographical proximity is anticipated to facilitate seamless cultural and workflow integration.

Expanding Horizons: US Market and CTV Growth

Onetag’s long-term strategic vision includes solidifying its presence in the European market while simultaneously building a more substantial footprint in the United States. The company currently operates a small office in New York to service its US publisher clients, but this acquisition is seen as a stepping stone towards a more comprehensive expansion.

Furthermore, Onetag plans to broaden its curation offering beyond display and online video this year. Despite not having a dedicated Connected TV (CTV) business, Onetag demonstrated robust growth, achieving a 34% increase in net ad revenue last year. The incorporation of CTV capabilities is expected to unlock significant incremental growth opportunities, aligning with the industry’s increasing shift towards premium video inventory.

The acquisition has also had an immediate positive impact on Onetag’s client base. Gramigna highlighted that the relatively low overlap in their respective client portfolios meant that the acquisition has already helped to strengthen Onetag’s position with buyers. "That’s another element of why we decided to do this deal," Gramigna stated. "The fact that they’ve been able to get the brands and the CMOs they typically talk to excited about working in programmatic thanks to these formats helps the narrative when it comes to our relationship with media agencies." This suggests that Aryel’s innovative creative solutions are proving to be a compelling proposition for advertisers and are enhancing Onetag’s appeal to media agencies seeking more engaging and effective programmatic campaigns.

Broader Industry Implications: The Future of Sell-Side Curation

The acquisition of Aryel by Onetag is indicative of a broader trend within the ad tech industry: the increasing importance of value-added services and differentiated offerings for SSPs. As supply chains become more transparent and efficiency becomes paramount, SSPs are no longer able to rely solely on their ability to provide access to inventory. They must actively demonstrate how they can enhance the quality of that inventory, improve the user experience, and deliver measurable outcomes for advertisers.

The integration of advanced creative capabilities, particularly interactive and immersive formats, represents a significant evolution in sell-side curation. It allows publishers to offer more engaging ad experiences that can capture audience attention and drive higher engagement rates. For advertisers, this translates into the potential for more impactful campaigns that resonate with consumers and achieve specific business objectives, whether that be brand awareness, lead generation, or direct sales.

The development of AI-driven deal optimization engines, as Onetag plans to release, further signifies the industry’s move towards more sophisticated and automated solutions. AI has the potential to analyze vast amounts of data to identify the most valuable inventory, optimize bidding strategies, and personalize ad delivery in real-time. By combining Aryel’s creative prowess with its own AI ambitions, Onetag is positioning itself at the forefront of this technological shift, aiming to provide a comprehensive and intelligent platform for both publishers and advertisers.

The strategic rationale behind this acquisition also points to the growing importance of European ad tech companies on the global stage. While much of the industry’s attention has historically been focused on North America, Onetag’s expansionist ambitions and its successful M&A activity demonstrate the increasing innovation and market influence emanating from Europe. The company’s focus on building a stronger US presence, coupled with its established European operations, suggests a global outlook and a strategy to compete effectively in all major advertising markets.

Ultimately, the Onetag-Aryel merger underscores a critical shift: the programmatic advertising ecosystem is maturing, demanding greater specialization, innovation, and demonstrable value from all participants. SSPs that can offer more than just inventory access, by providing tools for enhanced creative, intelligent optimization, and deeper publisher-advertiser relationships, are poised to lead the next wave of industry growth. The coming months will reveal the full impact of this strategic alliance as Onetag integrates Aryel’s capabilities and rolls out its new AI-powered optimization engine, aiming to redefine the standards for sell-side curation and creative effectiveness in the digital advertising world.
