PubMatic Signals Agentic AI’s Ascendance Beyond Direct Buys, Drives Q1 Growth Amidst DSP Headwinds

Friday, May 8th, 2026 – 9:22 am

The advertising technology landscape is undergoing a significant transformation, with PubMatic, a leading independent sell-side platform (SSP), announcing substantial progress in its "agentic" AI initiatives. CEO Rajeev Goel revealed during the company’s first-quarter earnings call on Thursday that over 30 fully autonomous, end-to-end agentic campaigns have been successfully executed through PubMatic’s proprietary AgenticOS platform. This milestone signifies a pivotal shift, extending the reach of agentic ad tech beyond its traditional stronghold of direct ad buys and marking a new era for programmatic advertising efficiency and automation.

The expansion of agentic capabilities is not merely theoretical. As of the first quarter of 2026, AgenticOS has already facilitated more than 1,000 direct publisher deals. This burgeoning adoption of AI-driven solutions has propelled PubMatic’s emerging revenue category, largely fueled by these AI integrations, to an impressive 80% year-over-year growth rate for the quarter. Consequently, this category now constitutes 14% of PubMatic’s total revenue, underscoring the growing commercial viability and market acceptance of advanced AI in ad transactions.

This surge in agentic revenue contributed significantly to PubMatic’s overall first-quarter performance, which saw a 13% year-over-year increase in total revenue, reaching $62.6 million. The company also reported robust double-digit year-over-year growth in monetized impressions. Segment-specific growth highlights included an 18% year-over-year increase in Connected TV (CTV) as a standalone category and a substantial 25% growth in mobile app revenue, further demonstrating the broad applicability and demand for PubMatic’s evolving product suite.

The Agentic Advantage: Efficiency and Cost Savings

PubMatic’s AgenticOS platform is not only bolstering the company’s financial performance but is also demonstrably enhancing campaign efficiency for its clients, according to CEO Rajeev Goel. He highlighted that buyers leveraging the solution are experiencing significant improvements in their cost per mille (CPM) rates, with gains ranging from 30% to 40%. This enhanced efficiency stems from a streamlined, single-layer technology approach that mirrors the operational advantages enjoyed by "walled garden" platforms, enabling more direct and cost-effective transactions.

Furthermore, the elimination of intermediary fees inherent in end-to-end agentic deals executed through PubMatic’s platform allows buyers to acquire approximately 40% more publisher inventory for the same investment. Goel articulated this advantage by stating, "It’s a single layer of technology, and it looks a lot like what the walled gardens leverage to drive ad performance." This directness in the supply chain is a critical differentiator, promising greater value and transparency for advertisers.

PubMatic’s strategic initiatives to consolidate the ad tech supply chain are also yielding positive results. The company’s Activate direct-to-buyer connection has experienced a threefold increase in business since the first quarter of the previous year. Concurrently, its Connect data platform has expanded its network to include over 300 data and commerce media partners, encompassing prominent names such as Walmart Connect and PayPal Ads. This growth in partnerships signifies PubMatic’s increasing role as a central hub for data-driven advertising solutions.

The robust performance of PubMatic’s mobile app business, which saw a 25% year-over-year increase in revenue and contributed to a 5% growth in display advertising, further solidified the company’s financial standing. Collectively, revenue from mobile and omnichannel video accounted for a significant 79% of PubMatic’s total Q1 revenue. The SSP’s integration with the three leading mobile ad mediation platforms—AppLovin Max, Google AdMob, and Unity LevelPlay—along with its access to over 90% of global mobile SDK inventory, positions it as a dominant player in the mobile advertising ecosystem.

Adding another layer to its AI innovation, Goel emphasized the capabilities of AgenticOS’s Creative Innovation Suite. This AI-powered tool is designed to generate consistent and contextually relevant creative assets across various touchpoints, including CTV, mobile, and online display. Agencies such as Horizon Media, Crossmedia, and Kelly Scott Madison have reportedly adopted this suite, underscoring its practical application in modern advertising campaigns.

Goel expressed confidence in these advancements forming a strong foundation for PubMatic’s continued AI-driven growth. The company reaffirmed its previous Q4 projection of achieving double-digit growth in the latter half of 2026, signaling optimism for the future.

However, investor sentiment remains cautiously optimistic regarding the sustained revenue growth of PubMatic’s agentic AI business. Some investors have voiced concerns that despite the substantial number of direct deals and autonomous campaigns facilitated by AgenticOS, these initiatives still represent "an immaterial percentage" of PubMatic’s overall business. In response, PubMatic CFO Steve Pantelick clarified that AI’s impact extends beyond direct campaign execution. He noted that AI is also streamlining internal operations, such as accelerating campaign setup and troubleshooting for publishers. Pantelick anticipates that these operational efficiencies, coupled with continued growth in mobile and CTV, will drive sustained double-digit revenue increases.

Navigating DSP Competition and Market Dynamics

While PubMatic is enthusiastic about the potential of AI, the company is also contending with persistent challenges in the programmatic ecosystem, specifically the ongoing competition between Demand-Side Platforms (DSPs) and Supply-Side Platforms (SSPs) for direct advertiser business.

PubMatic acknowledged facing headwinds from a major, unnamed DSP—widely understood to be The Trade Desk—which has reduced its spending on PubMatic’s SSP. This reduction is likely attributable to the increasing adoption of The Trade Desk’s direct-to-publisher solution, OpenPath, which bypasses traditional SSP intermediaries. This situation contributed to a 12% year-over-year decline in PubMatic’s U.S. revenue during the first quarter, according to Pantelick. However, this domestic dip was partially offset by robust growth in other regions, with the Asia-Pacific market experiencing a 25% increase and the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region showing 10% growth.

The impact of the unnamed DSP’s reduced spend is projected to continue affecting PubMatic’s earnings, with the company forecasting a revenue decrease of between 2% and 4% for the second quarter. Investors have sought further clarity on the extent of this DSP’s influence. Pantelick reassured them that revenue from this specific DSP was better than anticipated in Q1, a positive outcome attributed to PubMatic’s efforts to "optimize our platform to meet the needs of this buyer." The company anticipates fully lapping the impact of this DSP’s reduced activity by the third quarter.

To mitigate the financial impact of this DSP’s pullback, PubMatic has actively diversified its partnerships. The company added over 50 new DSPs to its partner roster in the past year and achieved a 20% increase in integrations with mid-market DSPs in the first quarter.

Further strengthening its ecosystem, PubMatic secured a significant integration with Amazon DSP during the quarter. This collaboration involves integrating Amazon’s Dynamic Traffic Engine, a move that has reportedly enhanced publisher CPMs by up to 10% since its implementation, according to Goel. This partnership underscores PubMatic’s commitment to working with major players to optimize publisher monetization and advertiser reach.

Future Trajectory and Strategic Outlook

Looking ahead, PubMatic faces immediate organizational shifts with the departure of Kyle Dozeman, CRO of the Americas, and Paulina Klimenko, Chief Growth Officer. Goel indicated that the company is exploring strategies to consolidate responsibilities, potentially into a new global Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) position.

PubMatic’s strategic vision continues to focus on expanding its reach within the mid-market segment. The company identifies mid-market, performance-focused DSPs and independent agencies as key growth areas, noting their demonstrated agility in adopting AI solutions compared to larger, more established holding companies.

In a forward-looking statement, PubMatic expressed keen interest in collaborating with emerging AI powerhouses, particularly OpenAI, as ChatGPT expands its presence in the advertising domain. Goel revealed that PubMatic has already been experimenting with smaller AI players like Kontext and Dappier, and is "already innovating on the ad formats and appropriate signals to monetize that kind of inventory."

Goel pointed to OpenAI’s ambitious goal of generating $100 billion in ad revenue by 2030 as a clear indicator that such an undertaking will necessitate broad ecosystem collaboration. "It’s going to be an ecosystem-wide effort for them to get to that level," he asserted, positioning PubMatic as a crucial partner in achieving this monumental objective. The company’s proactive approach to integrating AI and its strategic partnerships signal a commitment to staying at the forefront of ad tech innovation, even as it navigates the complexities of the current market dynamics.
