Onetag Acquires Italian Creative Ad Tech Platform Aryel to Bolster Sell-Side Curation and AI-Driven Optimization

Monday, March 2nd, 2026 – 3:00 am

In a strategic move to enhance its sell-side curation capabilities and accelerate the development of its artificial intelligence-driven deal optimization engine, Onetag, a prominent global ad exchange and curation platform, announced on Monday the acquisition of Aryel, an innovative Italian creative ad tech company. This acquisition marks Onetag’s first-ever acquisition and is poised to significantly differentiate the company in an increasingly competitive digital advertising landscape where Supply-Side Platforms (SSPs) are under mounting pressure to move beyond being mere intermediaries.

The drive for differentiation within the SSP sector has been a significant catalyst for the burgeoning trend of sell-side curation over the past few years. Onetag’s acquisition of Aryel directly aligns with this imperative, integrating Aryel’s specialized creative technology to empower Onetag’s curation solution with advanced tools for the precise modification and rigorous testing of interactive ad creative. These newly acquired capabilities are also earmarked for a crucial role in training Onetag’s forthcoming AI-based deal optimization engine, slated for release at the end of March.

The Rise of Sell-Side Curation and the Need for Differentiation

The digital advertising ecosystem is in a constant state of evolution, with increasing emphasis on efficiency, transparency, and performance. As supply-path optimization (SPO) gains traction, advertisers and agencies are scrutinizing the value proposition of each intermediary in the ad tech chain. SSPs, traditionally responsible for connecting publishers with demand-side platforms (DSPs), are finding that simply facilitating transactions is no longer a sufficient differentiator. This has led to a strategic pivot towards offering more value-added services, with sell-side curation emerging as a key area of focus.

Sell-side curation involves the SSP actively packaging and managing ad inventory, often by applying a layer of data and intelligence to optimize the quality and performance of the inventory before it reaches buyers. This can include measures like quality scoring, audience segmentation, and, increasingly, enhancing the creative assets themselves.

Filippo Gramigna, co-CEO of Onetag, articulated this challenge, stating that the curation market has become "crowded with non-differentiated middlemen." He emphasized that the most effective strategy to stand out in this increasingly saturated environment is to "make it easy for advertisers of all sizes to get started with curation and create their own deal IDs." This philosophy underscores the strategic importance of Aryel’s technology, which directly addresses the creative aspect of ad delivery, a critical component of campaign success.

Aryel’s Creative Prowess Integrated into Onetag’s Curation Platform

Aryel’s core strength lies in its ability to reformat existing creative assets into programmatic-friendly formats, ensuring compatibility with standard IAB banner sizes and online video specifications. This capability is particularly valuable in adapting advertiser materials for programmatic campaigns, streamlining the workflow for agencies and brands.

More significantly, Aryel specializes in interactive creative formats. This focus aligns perfectly with Onetag’s existing curated marketplace, which boasts approximately 50,000 high-impact ad units sourced from over 2,000 direct publisher connections. The integration of Aryel’s interactive capabilities is expected to elevate the effectiveness of these premium ad placements.

"Placing interactive ads within already high-performing ad slots should make those placements even more effective at driving outcomes," Gramigna explained. Interactive ad units offer a heightened level of engagement, allowing for richer storytelling and more dynamic calls to action. For example, Aryel’s "try it on" creative format, designed for apparel and accessories brands, enables consumers to virtually try on items using their device’s camera. This immersive experience, delivered seamlessly within a standard IAB banner, allows users to interact without leaving the publisher’s site, thereby minimizing friction and enhancing conversion potential.

Furthermore, Aryel has been actively experimenting with interactive formats tailored for AI chatbot interfaces. This forward-looking development positions Onetag to explore new advertising frontiers on emerging conversational AI platforms, a rapidly growing segment of the digital landscape.

A Strategic Partnership Culminating in Acquisition

The relationship between Onetag and Aryel is not new. The two companies began collaborating approximately a year and a half prior to the acquisition. This period of successful partnership provided Onetag, supported by its largest shareholder Wise Equity, with the confidence to pursue a full acquisition. This maiden acquisition for Onetag signifies a significant step in its strategic expansion.

While the financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, Gramigna confirmed that the deal has been finalized. Based on the previous year’s performance, the combined entity is projected to generate $70 million in net revenue. This financial robustness provides a solid foundation for future growth and investment in innovation.

The acquisition brings Aryel’s entire team of 45 employees into Onetag, expanding the total workforce to approximately 130 professionals. The addition of Aryel’s four co-founders to Onetag’s leadership team is a key element of the integration strategy. Notably, Aryel’s CEO, Mattia Salvi, will assume the critical role of Chief Growth Officer and Head of Go-to-Market, signaling a strong emphasis on market penetration and business development.

Cultural and Operational Integration: A Tuscan Synergy

The geographical proximity of the two Italian companies is expected to facilitate a smooth integration of their respective cultures and workflows. Aryel’s headquarters is located just about an hour away from Onetag’s tech hub in Tuscany, fostering a sense of shared identity and enabling easier collaboration. This localized synergy can accelerate the realization of the acquisition’s strategic objectives.

Future Growth Trajectories: US Expansion and CTV Opportunity

Onetag’s long-term vision includes solidifying its presence in the European market while simultaneously building a more substantial footprint in the United States. Currently, Onetag maintains a small New York office to serve its US publisher clients. The acquisition of Aryel, with its potential to attract a broader range of advertisers, is expected to be instrumental in this US expansion strategy.

The company also plans to broaden its curation offering beyond display and online video formats within the current year. While Onetag has demonstrated impressive growth, achieving a 34% increase in net ad revenue last year even without a significant connected TV (CTV) presence, the integration of CTV capabilities is anticipated to unlock substantial incremental growth opportunities. The burgeoning CTV market, characterized by its premium inventory and engaged audiences, presents a significant avenue for Onetag to leverage its enhanced creative and optimization tools.

The acquisition also strengthens Onetag’s client base on the buy side, as there was minimal overlap between the two companies’ existing client portfolios. "That’s another element of why we decided to do this deal," Gramigna remarked. "The fact that they’ve been able to get the brands and the CMOs they typically talk to excited about working in programmatic thanks to these formats helps the narrative when it comes to our relationship with media agencies." This indicates that Aryel’s ability to engage directly with brands and marketing decision-makers on the creative front will translate into stronger partnerships with media agencies, who are increasingly seeking integrated solutions from their programmatic partners.

Analysis of Implications: A Proactive Stance in a Shifting Landscape

The acquisition of Aryel by Onetag is a clear indicator of the strategic priorities shaping the digital advertising industry. As programmatic advertising matures, the emphasis is shifting from mere access to inventory to delivering demonstrable value and superior performance.

Key Implications:

  • Enhanced Creative Capabilities Drive Performance: By integrating Aryel’s interactive creative technology, Onetag is positioning itself to offer advertisers more engaging and effective ad experiences. This can lead to higher click-through rates, improved conversion metrics, and ultimately, a better return on ad spend, which are critical for advertiser satisfaction and retention.
  • AI-Powered Optimization for Efficiency: The planned release of Onetag’s AI-based deal optimization engine, fueled by Aryel’s creative data, suggests a move towards more intelligent and automated programmatic trading. AI can analyze vast datasets to identify the most valuable inventory and buyer combinations, leading to greater efficiency and reduced wasted ad spend.
  • Differentiation in a Commoditized Market: In a landscape where many SSPs offer similar core functionalities, Onetag’s focus on creative innovation and intelligent curation provides a distinct competitive advantage. This allows them to attract and retain premium publishers and sophisticated advertisers who are looking for more than just basic programmatic execution.
  • Strategic Expansion into High-Growth Areas: The acquisition lays the groundwork for Onetag’s expansion into the US market and its planned foray into CTV. These are critical growth vectors for any ad tech company looking to scale and maintain relevance in the evolving media consumption landscape.
  • Synergy Between Creative and Curation: The core of this acquisition lies in the synergy between creative development and inventory curation. By bringing these two elements under one roof, Onetag can ensure that the creative assets are not only compelling but also perfectly optimized for the curated inventory, leading to a more cohesive and effective advertising solution.
  • Adaptation to Evolving Consumer Behavior: The exploration of interactive formats for AI chatbot interfaces reflects a proactive approach to engaging with consumers on emerging platforms. As conversational AI becomes more prevalent, the ability to deliver interactive advertising within these environments will be a significant differentiator.

The acquisition of Aryel by Onetag is more than just a financial transaction; it represents a strategic evolution for Onetag. By investing in advanced creative technology and AI-driven optimization, the company is proactively addressing the challenges and opportunities within the modern programmatic advertising ecosystem. This move signals a commitment to moving beyond the role of a passive conduit and establishing itself as a value-adding partner for both publishers and advertisers, ultimately aiming to drive better outcomes in a more transparent and efficient digital advertising future.
