PubMatic Bets on Agentic AI as Industry Faces Inflection Point

PubMatic, a leading sell-side platform (SSP), announced its fourth-quarter and full-year 2025 financial results, revealing a period of revenue contraction that the company, however, framed as a strategic inflection point. Despite a 6% year-over-year decline in Q4 revenue to $80 million and a 3% dip for the full year to $282.9 million, PubMatic’s stock saw a notable increase of approximately 6% in after-hours trading, signaling investor confidence in the company’s future trajectory. The core of this optimism lies in PubMatic’s ambitious pivot towards agentic artificial intelligence (AI), a technology the company believes will redefine the digital advertising landscape.

The financial figures, while showing negative growth, surpassed PubMatic’s own revenue projections, a key factor contributing to the positive market reaction. This performance, according to PubMatic Chief Financial Officer Steve Pantelick, was significantly influenced by a normalization of spend from a large, unnamed incumbent demand-side platform (DSP). This unnamed partner’s recalibration of spending, coupled with the strategic decision by The Trade Desk last August to reclassify SSPs as resellers, has prompted PubMatic to actively diversify its DSP partnerships, focusing on mid-tier platforms with greater growth potential.

PubMatic CEO Rajeev Goel articulated a bold vision for the future, predicting that by 2028, a quarter of all digital advertising will be executed autonomously through agentic AI, with this share projected to reach 50% by 2030. This forecast underscores the company’s strategic commitment to positioning itself as a pioneer in this burgeoning field. PubMatic’s proactive steps, including the launch of its AgenticOS platform and its involvement in developing the Ad Context Protocol, are designed to capitalize on this anticipated shift. The company has already demonstrated early success, having facilitated over 250 agentic ad campaigns since its first agent-executed CTV campaign in January with agency Butler/Till. These campaigns have attracted new advertisers, validating the incremental revenue potential of agentic solutions and establishing a new revenue stream for PubMatic through additional fees on AgenticOS campaigns. The company’s AI accelerator program has also seen rapid adoption, with nearly 100 brands, agencies, and streaming platforms signing up, marking the fastest early-stage adoption of any product launched by PubMatic.

Navigating a Shifting DSP Landscape

The financial performance in 2025 was undeniably shaped by evolving relationships with key DSP partners. The Trade Desk’s decision to classify SSPs as resellers in August 2025, a move that encouraged direct-to-publisher connections like OpenPath and effectively bypassed traditional SSPs, had a discernible impact on PubMatic’s revenue. Both Goel and Pantelick acknowledged that an unnamed DSP partner’s spending fluctuations in Q3 of 2025 created a drag on revenue before stabilizing in the subsequent months. Pantelick highlighted that, when adjusted for the impact of this specific DSP and the significant political ad spend in 2024, PubMatic’s revenue would have shown a robust 18% year-over-year increase in Q4 and a 9% increase for the full year 2025.

In response to these dynamics, PubMatic has made the diversification of its DSP partner mix a top priority within its five-point growth strategy. The company has actively onboarded approximately 50 new DSP partners and has strategically realigned its largest DSP relationships to focus on rapidly expanding sectors like e-commerce and high-value verticals such as pharmaceuticals. This strategic recalibration is already yielding results, with Amazon DSP now ranking among PubMatic’s top five buyers, a development that could signal the intensifying competition between Amazon and The Trade Desk in the advertising ecosystem. Furthermore, ad spend from mid-market DSPs experienced a substantial 30% year-over-year increase in Q4, with advertisers represented by these platforms identified as the fastest-growing segment of the market in the past year.

PubMatic’s Multifaceted Growth Strategy

Beyond its focus on agentic AI and DSP diversification, PubMatic’s strategic roadmap for growth encompasses several key initiatives, detailed in its five-point plan.

1. Activate Direct-to-Buyer Business: This initiative, which saw a threefold increase in Q4, represents a significant component of PubMatic’s supply-path optimization efforts. In 2025, supply-path optimization accounted for an impressive 55% of all activity on PubMatic’s platform.

2. Continued Growth in CTV, Mobile, and Emerging Streams: PubMatic is experiencing strong momentum in key growth areas. Excluding the impact of 2024 political ad spend, Connected TV (CTV) revenue surged by 50% year-over-year in Q4. Mobile app growth remained robust, with a 25% increase for the quarter. Emerging revenue streams, which encompass Activate, commerce media, and new AI solutions, demonstrated exceptional growth of 75% in Q4 and now constitute nearly 10% of PubMatic’s total revenue.

3. Legacy Display Advertising Resilience: Despite the industry’s focus on newer formats, PubMatic’s legacy display ad business also showed resilience, with a 20% increase in Q4. This indicates a continued demand for traditional digital advertising formats and PubMatic’s ability to serve them effectively.

4. Emerging AI Solutions: This point directly addresses the company’s strategic investment in developing and offering new AI-driven advertising solutions to publishers. These solutions are designed to enhance publisher capabilities and unlock new revenue opportunities.

5. Internal AI Optimizations: PubMatic is also leveraging AI to optimize its internal operations. Notably, 40% of the new code developed by the company in the latter half of 2025 was AI-generated. This internal adoption of AI is expected to drive efficiency and innovation across the organization.

Currently, approximately 10% of PubMatic’s publishers are generating revenue from AI-powered solutions, including AgenticOS and other publisher-facing products. Goel expressed confidence in the future potential of this segment, stating, "It’s great that it’s in double digits, but that number should be 100% eventually. We’re still early, and there’s a lot of runway ahead of us."

The Agentic AI Revolution in Advertising

The concept of agentic AI in advertising signifies a paradigm shift from traditional programmatic buying and selling to a more autonomous and intelligent system. Agentic AI refers to AI systems that can act independently to achieve specific goals, making decisions and taking actions without constant human intervention. In the context of advertising, this translates to AI agents capable of understanding campaign objectives, identifying optimal inventory, negotiating prices, and executing bids in real-time, all while continuously learning and adapting based on performance data.

The Ad Context Protocol, in which PubMatic is involved, aims to provide a standardized framework for agentic AI systems to understand and interpret the context of ad environments. This is crucial for ensuring that advertisements are placed in relevant and brand-safe environments, a challenge that has long plagued the digital advertising industry. By enabling agents to understand context, the protocol seeks to enhance the effectiveness and safety of AI-driven advertising.

The rapid adoption of agentic campaigns by PubMatic, exceeding 250 within a short period, suggests a strong market appetite for these advanced solutions. The ability of these campaigns to attract new advertisers, as highlighted by Goel, indicates that agentic AI is not merely optimizing existing spend but is also expanding the overall advertising pie by creating new opportunities for publishers and advertisers alike. The additional revenue generated by AgenticOS further solidifies its strategic importance for PubMatic, offering a pathway to increased profitability beyond traditional SSP revenue streams.

The AI accelerator program’s success, with nearly 100 participants, underscores the industry’s readiness to embrace AI-driven innovation. This broad engagement suggests a collective effort within the ad tech ecosystem to explore and implement agentic AI, paving the way for widespread adoption in the coming years. As the digital advertising landscape continues to evolve, PubMatic’s bold bet on agentic AI positions it at the forefront of this transformative wave, aiming to not only navigate but also shape the future of advertising. The company’s strategic moves, from diversifying DSP partnerships to pioneering AI solutions, signal a clear intent to emerge stronger from the current industry inflection point.
