Onetag Acquires Italian Creative Ad Tech Platform Aryel to Bolster Sell-Side Curation and AI-Driven Optimization

Milan, Italy – March 2, 2026 – In a strategic move to enhance its sell-side curation capabilities and accelerate the development of its artificial intelligence-driven deal optimization engine, Onetag, a prominent global ad exchange and curation platform, announced today its acquisition of Aryel, an innovative Italian creative ad tech company. This acquisition, finalized on Monday, March 2nd, 2026, marks Onetag’s inaugural acquisition and signifies a significant step in its mission to differentiate itself within an increasingly competitive programmatic advertising landscape.

The rationale behind this integration stems from the growing pressure on Supply-Side Platforms (SSPs) to demonstrate value beyond simply acting as conduits for ad inventory. The rise of supply-path optimization (SPO) strategies by advertisers and agencies has intensified the need for SSPs to offer more sophisticated solutions, pushing them towards services like sell-side curation. Onetag’s acquisition of Aryel is a direct response to this market dynamic, aiming to equip its Smart Curation platform with advanced tools for creative adaptation and testing, ultimately feeding into its soon-to-be-released AI-based deal optimization engine.

Strategic Rationale: Differentiating Through Creative Innovation

Filippo Gramigna, co-CEO of Onetag, articulated the strategic imperative behind the acquisition, highlighting the crowded nature of the current curation market. "The curation market has become crowded with non-differentiated middlemen," Gramigna stated in an interview. "The best way to stand out in this increasingly crowded market is to make it easy for advertisers of all sizes to get started with curation and create their own deal IDs."

Aryel’s proprietary technology directly addresses this need by enabling the seamless adaptation of existing creative assets into programmatic-friendly formats. The platform excels at reformatting creative content to meet industry-standard banner sizes and online video specifications, a crucial capability for advertisers looking to leverage their existing creative investments within programmatic workflows.

Moreover, Aryel’s specialization in interactive ad creative is seen as a key differentiator for Onetag. Onetag already boasts a curated marketplace of 50,000 high-impact ad units, sourced through more than 2,000 direct publisher connections. By integrating Aryel’s interactive capabilities, Onetag aims to elevate the performance of these premium ad placements. "Placing interactive ads within already high-performing ad slots should make those placements even more effective at driving outcomes," Gramigna explained.

Examples of Aryel’s innovative creative formats include a "try it on" feature designed for apparel and accessories brands. This functionality allows users, for instance, to virtually try on different eyewear frames using their device’s camera. Crucially, this immersive experience occurs entirely within a standard IAB banner ad, ensuring that users can engage without navigating away from the publisher’s site, thereby minimizing user friction and maximizing engagement. Aryel’s ongoing experimentation with interactive formats for AI chatbot interfaces also presents Onetag with avenues to explore new advertising opportunities on emerging conversational AI platforms.

The Onetag Journey: From DSP to Curated Exchange

Onetag’s evolution from a Demand-Side Platform (DSP) in 2015 to a performance-focused SSP for Procter & Gamble, and its subsequent global expansion in 2020, underscores its adaptability. The launch of its sell-side curation platform, Smart Curation, in 2022 was a pivotal moment, signaling its commitment to providing publishers and advertisers with more control and efficiency in the programmatic ecosystem. The acquisition of Aryel represents the next logical step in this trajectory, solidifying its position as a solutions provider rather than a mere transactional intermediary.

Financials and Integration: A Synergistic Union

While the specific financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, Gramigna confirmed that the deal is complete. Based on the previous year’s performance, the combined entity projects a net revenue of $70 million. This financial synergy is bolstered by the integration of Aryel’s entire team of 45 employees, bringing Onetag’s total headcount to approximately 130. The four co-founders of Aryel will assume key leadership roles within Onetag, with Aryel CEO Mattia Salvi appointed as Chief Growth Officer and Head of Go-to-Market. This integration of talent is expected to accelerate Onetag’s strategic objectives.

The proximity of Aryel’s base, located approximately an hour away from Onetag’s tech hub in Tuscany, is anticipated to facilitate a smooth cultural and workflow integration. This geographical advantage, coupled with the complementary nature of their offerings, suggests a strong foundation for a cohesive combined entity.

Future Growth and Market Expansion: Targeting the US and CTV

Onetag’s long-term strategy encompasses strengthening its presence in the European market while simultaneously building a more substantial footprint in the United States. Currently, Onetag maintains a small office in New York to serve its US publisher clients. The acquisition of Aryel, with its existing relationships and innovative creative solutions, is expected to provide a significant boost to Onetag’s go-to-market efforts in the US.

Beyond display and online video, Onetag has ambitious plans to expand its curation offering into new formats this year. Despite not yet having a significant presence in the Connected TV (CTV) space, Onetag experienced a remarkable 34% growth in net ad revenue last year. The integration of CTV capabilities is therefore seen as a substantial opportunity for incremental growth.

The acquisition also offers immediate benefits to Onetag’s client base. Gramigna noted the limited overlap in their respective client portfolios, suggesting that the acquisition has already strengthened Onetag’s position on the buy side. "The fact that they’ve been able to get the brands and the CMOs they typically talk to excited about working in programmatic thanks to these formats helps the narrative when it comes to our relationship with media agencies," he remarked, underscoring the appeal of Aryel’s creative solutions to direct advertisers and their potential to enhance relationships with media agencies.

The Broader Industry Impact: Redefining the SSP Role

The Onetag-Aryel merger reflects a broader industry trend where SSPs are evolving beyond their traditional roles. As programmatic advertising matures, the emphasis is shifting towards platforms that can offer integrated solutions encompassing data, creative, and optimization. By acquiring a creative ad tech specialist, Onetag is positioning itself to provide a more holistic offering, enabling advertisers to not only access premium inventory but also to create engaging and effective ad experiences that drive measurable outcomes.

This strategic maneuver is likely to put further pressure on other SSPs to innovate and demonstrate tangible value. The integration of AI-driven optimization, powered by data gleaned from interactive creative testing, signals a move towards more intelligent and automated programmatic trading. As the industry continues to grapple with issues of transparency, efficiency, and performance, acquisitions like this are indicative of the evolving landscape, where differentiation through specialized technology and integrated solutions will be paramount for success. The success of Onetag’s new AI-based deal optimization engine, slated for release at the end of this month, will be a key indicator of the immediate impact of this acquisition on the market.
