Telly Unlocks Programmatic Home Screen Advertising, Championing Industry Standards for Smarter CTV Investment

New York, NY – September 9, 2026 – Telly, the innovative startup renowned for distributing free smart TVs in exchange for user data and advertising exposure, is strategically opening its home screen advertising inventory to programmatic buyers. This move signifies a pivotal step in the company’s mission to attract greater advertising spend by pushing for the establishment of industry-wide standards in the burgeoning connected TV (CTV) landscape.

Telly’s unique television sets feature a distinctive dual-screen design. While the main screen displays viewer content, a secondary, narrower screen positioned below it consistently presents a stream of news and advertisements. This secondary screen is now the exclusive domain for Telly’s programmatic home screen ads. The company is leveraging Magnite’s SpringServe ad server to facilitate ad delivery, with demand originating from prominent players in the ad tech ecosystem, including The Trade Desk and Teads.

Mike Shehan, Telly’s Chief Revenue Officer, emphasized the critical need for scale to ensure the long-term viability of home screen advertising. "For home screen ads to achieve widespread adoption and demonstrate their full potential, they require scale, and that’s precisely where programmatic enablement comes into play," Shehan stated in a recent interview with AdExchanger. Shehan brings a wealth of experience to Telly, having previously served as the CEO of SpotX, a leading video supply-side platform that was acquired by Magnite in 2021 for a substantial $1.17 billion, underscoring his deep understanding of the programmatic video market.

While Telly is making significant strides, it’s important to note that it is not the first to introduce programmatic home screen advertising. Ad tech platform Nexxen, for example, began offering programmatic access to its native home screen ads across a growing roster of TV manufacturers, including V (formerly VIDAA) and TiVo, approximately a year prior. Similarly, Supply-Side Platforms (SSPs) like Magnite have been facilitating programmatic buying for pause ads on CTV devices for an extended period.

Telly’s distinct approach, however, lies in its proactive engagement with industry bodies. The company is actively collaborating with the IAB Tech Lab to develop standardized specifications for home screen ads within the bidstream. The IAB Tech Lab concluded its public comment period for proposed spec updates at the end of June and subsequently finalized these crucial signal updates in July. This commitment to standardization is vital for fostering trust and predictability among advertisers and agencies looking to invest in this emerging ad format.

Shehan further highlighted Telly’s competitive advantages, pointing to its innovative second screens and unparalleled access to first-party customer data. "Our second screens, coupled with our deep understanding of our users’ preferences and behaviors, provide a significant edge in targeting home screen ads effectively and driving demonstrable business results for our advertising partners," he explained.

The Strategic Advantage of Deep Data and Dual Screens

The foundation of Telly’s advertising model is built upon a robust data collection process initiated at the point of user signup. Prospective Telly users are required to complete a comprehensive questionnaire designed to gather detailed demographic, lifestyle, and behavioral insights. This survey delves deeply into aspects such as household income, the number of residents, specific brand preferences, insurance providers, vehicle ownership details (including make, model, and ownership status – leased or owned), and other interest-based indicators.

"The questionnaire goes very deep on demographics, lifestyle, and brand loyalty," Shehan elaborated. This rich, first-party data, when combined with Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) data – which passively tracks the content users are viewing on their main screen – creates a powerful targeting engine. For instance, Telly can precisely identify and reach households that are actively in the market for new insurance policies, allowing providers to deliver highly relevant advertising messages.

Beyond its sophisticated data capabilities, the Telly device’s dual-screen architecture offers a unique advertising canvas. The second screen, operating independently of the main display, allows for the seamless integration of ads without interrupting the primary viewing experience. This means advertisers can reach consumers even when they are streaming content ad-free, a segment that has historically been challenging to monetize through traditional advertising methods.

Expanding Ad Formats and Driving Engagement

In addition to programmatic accessibility, Telly is expanding its advertising opportunities by offering longer-form home screen ads, up to five minutes in duration, available through private marketplace deals facilitated by Magnite. Shehan believes that the combination of extended ad length and the non-disruptive placement on the home screen is a potent recipe for enhanced viewer engagement.

As a compelling example, Telly revealed that one of its streaming service partners, the identity of which was not disclosed, experienced a fivefold increase in app opens when utilizing a five-minute home screen ad compared to a shorter, two-minute advertisement. This case study underscores the potential for longer, more immersive ad experiences to drive meaningful consumer action.

This innovative approach is resonating with media buyers. Mike Treon, Head of CTV and Video Strategy at PMG, commented on the strategic value of Telly’s offering: "The home screen has always been a powerful front door for us to engage viewers. Telly extends that opportunity, giving brands a persistent presence that enhances engagement."

The Road Ahead: Standardization and Sustainable Investment

The success of Telly’s programmatic home screen advertising initiative hinges on its ability to demonstrate consistent performance and drive tangible ROI for advertisers. While the company’s focus on standardization through IAB Tech Lab collaboration is a positive step, the broader CTV advertising ecosystem is still maturing.

Industry analysts suggest that the widespread adoption of programmatic home screen ads will depend on several factors:

  • Continued Data Sophistication: As Telly refines its data collection and analysis capabilities, the precision of its targeting will become even more valuable. The ability to link demographic and behavioral data with viewing habits offers a level of insight that is difficult to replicate on other platforms.
  • Measurement and Attribution: Robust measurement frameworks are essential. Advertisers will need clear, standardized metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of their home screen ad campaigns, from brand awareness to direct response. Telly’s partnership with Magnite, a leader in ad serving and measurement, is likely to play a crucial role here.
  • Creative Innovation: The longer ad formats available through private marketplace deals present an opportunity for creative storytelling. Advertisers that can leverage this space to deliver engaging and informative content, rather than just traditional commercials, are likely to see the greatest success.
  • Scalability of the Telly Device Footprint: While Telly’s unique model has garnered attention, its market penetration will ultimately determine the scale of its advertising inventory. As more households adopt Telly devices, the reach of its home screen ads will grow commensurately.

The implications of Telly’s move are significant for the CTV advertising market. By embracing programmatic, Telly is not only opening up new revenue streams for itself but also contributing to the broader maturation of CTV as a premium advertising channel. The company’s commitment to industry standards, coupled with its innovative use of data and unique ad placements, positions it as a key player to watch in the evolving landscape of connected television advertising. The question now is whether this early enthusiasm will translate into sustained, long-term investment from major brands and agencies, solidifying home screen advertising as a core component of their media strategies. The industry will be closely observing Telly’s progress as it navigates these critical next steps.
