Onetag Acquires Creative Ad Tech Platform Aryel to Bolster Sell-Side Curation and AI-Driven Optimization

Monday, March 2nd, 2026 – 3:00 am

In a significant move to enhance its competitive edge within the rapidly evolving digital advertising landscape, Onetag, a global ad exchange and curation platform, announced on Monday its acquisition of Aryel, an innovative Italian creative ad tech company. This strategic union is designed to equip Onetag’s sell-side curation solution with advanced tools for crafting and testing interactive ad creatives, a capability poised to significantly influence the development of Onetag’s forthcoming AI-based deal optimization engine, slated for release by the end of the month.

The acquisition underscores a broader industry trend where Supply-Side Platforms (SSPs) are under increasing pressure to demonstrate value beyond simply acting as conduits for ad inventory. This imperative has fueled the rise of sell-side curation, a strategy Onetag has actively pursued. By integrating Aryel’s specialized creative technologies, Onetag aims to offer advertisers more sophisticated and engaging ways to interact with audiences, thereby differentiating itself in a market increasingly characterized by commoditized offerings.

The Strategic Rationale: Beyond Interchangeable Pipes

The digital advertising ecosystem has witnessed a profound shift in recent years, largely driven by the increasing adoption of supply-path optimization (SPO). SPO strategies empower advertisers and their agencies to gain greater control and transparency over their media supply chains, scrutinizing every step from ad impression to final delivery. This has placed considerable pressure on SSPs, forcing them to re-evaluate their value proposition. The traditional model of merely connecting publishers with demand sources is no longer sufficient to command premium pricing or secure long-term partnerships.

Onetag’s proactive approach to this challenge is exemplified by its launch of "Smart Curation" in 2022. This platform was conceived as a means to empower publishers and advertisers to create curated marketplaces, offering a more controlled and performance-oriented environment for ad transactions. However, as Filippo Gramigna, co-CEO of Onetag, articulated, the curation market itself has become increasingly crowded with intermediaries lacking distinct capabilities. The key to standing out, Gramigna noted, lies in democratizing access to curation tools, making it simpler for advertisers of all sizes to establish their own deal IDs and leverage curated inventory.

Aryel’s technology directly addresses this need by providing a robust solution for adapting and enhancing existing creative assets for programmatic environments. The platform excels at reformatting creative materials to seamlessly integrate with standard IAB banner sizes and online video specifications, a crucial step in ensuring creative compatibility across diverse ad placements.

Interactive Impact: Elevating Engagement and Outcomes

The integration of Aryel’s capabilities is expected to significantly amplify the impact of Onetag’s curated marketplace. Onetag currently boasts a curated inventory of approximately 50,000 high-impact ad units, sourced through over 2,000 direct-to-publisher connections. By infusing these premium placements with interactive creative elements, Onetag anticipates a substantial uplift in advertising effectiveness and a stronger correlation with measurable outcomes.

Gramigna elaborated on the transformative potential of interactive advertising within curated environments. He cited Aryel’s "try-it-on" creative format, particularly relevant for apparel and accessories brands. For instance, an eyewear company could leverage this feature to allow consumers to virtually try on different frames using their device’s camera. Crucially, this interactive experience is designed to function entirely within a standard IAB banner, eliminating the need for users to navigate away from the publisher’s site, thereby maintaining user engagement and reducing friction.

Furthermore, Aryel’s exploratory work with interactive formats for AI chatbot interfaces opens up entirely new avenues for Onetag. As AI-driven conversational interfaces become more prevalent, the ability to embed interactive advertising within these experiences presents a significant growth opportunity. This foresight positions Onetag to capitalize on emerging advertising paradigms, moving beyond traditional display and video formats.

A Chronology of Collaboration and Acquisition

The relationship between Onetag and Aryel is not new. The two companies began collaborating approximately eighteen months prior to the acquisition announcement. This initial partnership proved successful, laying the groundwork for the eventual acquisition, a decision supported by Onetag’s largest shareholder, Wise Equity. This marks Onetag’s inaugural acquisition, signaling a new phase of strategic expansion.

While the financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed, Gramigna confirmed its completion. Based on the previous year’s performance, the combined entity reported $70 million in net revenue. This financial synergy is expected to be bolstered by the integration of Aryel’s team and technology.

The acquisition brings Aryel’s entire workforce of 45 employees into the Onetag fold, expanding the total headcount to around 130. Notably, Aryel’s four co-founders have been integrated into Onetag’s leadership structure. Mattia Salvi, Aryel’s CEO, will assume the role of Chief Growth Officer and Head of Go-to-Market, a testament to the strategic importance placed on driving future business development.

Navigating Integration and Future Expansion

The immediate priority for the newly combined entity is the seamless integration of Onetag and Aryel’s corporate cultures and operational workflows. Gramigna expressed optimism regarding this process, noting that the geographical proximity of Aryel’s base to Onetag’s tech hub in Tuscany—approximately an hour’s drive apart—should facilitate a smoother transition. This geographical advantage can foster closer collaboration and a shared sense of purpose.

Onetag’s long-term strategic vision encompasses solidifying its presence in the European market while simultaneously building a more substantial footprint in the United States. Currently, Onetag maintains a small New York office to serve its US publisher clients. This acquisition is expected to accelerate its US expansion efforts, leveraging Aryel’s established relationships and Onetag’s enhanced offering.

The company also intends to broaden its curation services beyond display and online video formats this year. Despite not having a dedicated connected TV (CTV) business, Onetag achieved a remarkable 34% growth in net ad revenue last year. The incorporation of CTV into its offering is anticipated to unlock significant incremental growth opportunities. The burgeoning CTV market, projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 15% in the coming years, presents a compelling landscape for interactive and curated advertising solutions.

Synergistic Client Portfolios and Market Narrative

A key factor contributing to the strategic rationale of this acquisition was the limited overlap in the client portfolios of Onetag and Aryel. This synergy allows Onetag to expand its reach within the buy-side ecosystem without cannibalizing existing relationships. By bringing Aryel’s expertise in engaging creative formats to Onetag’s programmatic platform, the company is better positioned to excite brands and Chief Marketing Officers (CMOs) about the possibilities of programmatic advertising.

Gramigna highlighted how Aryel’s ability to captivate brands and CMOs through innovative formats strengthens Onetag’s narrative when engaging with media agencies. In an industry where agencies are constantly seeking more effective and measurable advertising solutions, the combination of Onetag’s curated inventory and Aryel’s interactive creative capabilities offers a compelling proposition. This synergy can lead to more effective campaigns, better return on ad spend (ROAS), and ultimately, deeper partnerships with agencies and their clients.

The acquisition is not merely about technology; it’s about enhancing the entire advertising value chain. By empowering publishers with better tools to monetize their inventory and providing advertisers with more engaging and effective ways to reach their target audiences, Onetag is strategically positioning itself as a leader in the next generation of digital advertising. The integration of Aryel’s creative prowess with Onetag’s programmatic infrastructure signifies a forward-thinking approach, anticipating the evolving needs of the industry and embracing innovation to drive measurable results. The successful execution of this integration and the subsequent launch of their AI-driven optimization engine could set a new benchmark for how sell-side platforms deliver value in an increasingly sophisticated and performance-centric market.
