In a strategic move to differentiate itself within the increasingly competitive programmatic advertising landscape, Onetag, a global ad exchange and curation platform, announced its acquisition of Aryel, an innovative Italian creative ad tech company. The acquisition, finalized on Monday, is poised to bolster Onetag’s sell-side curation solution with advanced tools for interactive ad creative development and testing, directly supporting the launch of Onetag’s new AI-based deal optimization engine scheduled for release at the end of the month. This development underscores a broader industry trend where Supply-Side Platforms (SSPs) are compelled to move beyond their traditional role as mere intermediaries and demonstrate tangible value to publishers and advertisers alike.
The pressure on SSPs stems significantly from the rise of supply-path optimization (SPO), a practice that aims to streamline the ad transaction process by reducing the number of intermediaries between advertisers and publishers. As SPO gains traction, platforms that offer only transactional capabilities are finding it harder to justify their existence and fees. This has spurred a wave of innovation, with many SSPs seeking to carve out unique selling propositions. The trend towards sell-side curation, which allows publishers to gain more control over the inventory they offer and the advertisers they work with, is a direct consequence of this competitive imperative. Onetag’s acquisition of Aryel is a clear manifestation of this strategy, aiming to integrate creative capabilities directly into its curation offering, thereby providing a more holistic and value-added service.
The Strategic Rationale Behind the Acquisition
Onetag, headquartered in Italy, has undergone a significant evolution since its inception as a Demand-Side Platform (DSP) in 2015. The company pivoted to build a performance-focused SSP for Procter & Gamble, eventually expanding this platform globally in 2020. Recognizing the need to stand out in a crowded market, Onetag launched its sell-side curation platform, Smart Curation, in 2022. According to Filippo Gramigna, co-CEO of Onetag, the curation market has become saturated with "non-differentiated middlemen." He believes the most effective way to distinguish Onetag is by empowering advertisers of all sizes to easily adopt curation and create their own deal IDs, thereby fostering more direct and efficient relationships.
Aryel’s technology directly addresses this challenge by offering tools that can adapt existing creative assets into programmatic-friendly formats. The platform is adept at reformatting creative materials to seamlessly fit industry-standard banner sizes and online video specifications. Crucially, Aryel specializes in interactive creative formats, a capability that perfectly complements Onetag’s existing curated marketplace. This marketplace boasts an impressive inventory of 50,000 high-impact ad units, sourced through over 2,000 direct-to-publisher connections.
The integration of Aryel’s interactive capabilities is expected to significantly enhance the effectiveness of Onetag’s curated placements. By combining high-performing ad slots with engaging, interactive ad experiences, Onetag aims to drive even stronger campaign outcomes for advertisers. Gramigna highlighted an example of Aryel’s innovative "try it on" creative format, which is particularly suited for apparel and accessories brands. An eyewear company, for instance, could leverage this format to allow potential customers to virtually try on different frames using their device’s camera. This immersive experience occurs entirely within a standard IAB banner, ensuring users can interact without leaving the publisher’s website, thereby minimizing friction and maximizing engagement.
Furthermore, Aryel has been actively exploring interactive formats for AI chatbot interfaces. This forward-looking development positions Onetag to tap into emerging advertising opportunities on these burgeoning conversational platforms, aligning with the industry’s trajectory towards more personalized and context-aware advertising.
A Collaborative Foundation and Future Growth
The relationship between Onetag and Aryel is not new; the two companies began collaborating approximately eighteen months prior to the acquisition. The success of this partnership, as noted by Gramigna, laid the groundwork for Onetag and its principal shareholder, Wise Equity, to pursue the acquisition. This marks Onetag’s inaugural acquisition, signaling a new phase of strategic growth and consolidation.
While the specific deal price was not disclosed, Gramigna confirmed the acquisition is complete. Based on the previous year’s financial performance, the combined entity reports a substantial $70 million in net revenue. This financial robustness provides a solid foundation for integrating Aryel’s operations and accelerating growth.
Beyond acquiring Aryel’s cutting-edge creative technology, Onetag is also absorbing Aryel’s entire workforce of 45 employees. This influx will bring Onetag’s total headcount to approximately 130 individuals. The four co-founders of Aryel will be integrated into Onetag’s leadership team. Notably, Aryel’s CEO, Mattia Salvi, will assume the critical role of Chief Growth Officer and Head of Go-to-Market, bringing his expertise to shape Onetag’s market strategy and expansion efforts.
The integration process is anticipated to be relatively seamless, given the geographical proximity of the two companies. Aryel’s headquarters is located just about an hour’s drive from Onetag’s technology hub in Tuscany, Italy. This close proximity is expected to facilitate the smooth merging of company cultures and workflows, fostering collaboration and operational synergy.
Expanding Horizons: US Market Entry and CTV Ambitions
Onetag’s long-term strategic vision includes solidifying its strong presence in the European market and subsequently establishing a more significant footprint in the United States. Currently, Onetag maintains a small office in New York to service its US publisher clients. The acquisition of Aryel is expected to accelerate this US expansion strategy by providing a more compelling and differentiated offering to American advertisers and agencies.
The company also has ambitious plans to broaden its curation offering beyond display and online video advertising in the current year. Despite not yet having a dedicated Connected TV (CTV) business, Onetag demonstrated impressive growth, with its net ad revenue increasing by 34% last year. The strategic integration of CTV into its offerings is projected to unlock significant incremental growth opportunities, aligning with the rapid expansion of the CTV advertising market. Industry analysts project the global CTV ad market to exceed $100 billion by 2027, presenting a substantial opportunity for platforms like Onetag to capture market share.
A significant benefit of the acquisition, as highlighted by Gramigna, is the minimal overlap in client portfolios between Onetag and Aryel. This synergy has already begun to strengthen Onetag’s client base on the buy side. "The fact that they’ve been able to get the brands and the CMOs they typically talk to excited about working in programmatic thanks to these formats helps the narrative when it comes to our relationship with media agencies," Gramigna stated. This suggests that Aryel’s ability to engage directly with brands and marketing executives, particularly through innovative creative solutions, can effectively bridge the gap and foster stronger partnerships with media agencies, who are increasingly seeking integrated solutions that deliver demonstrable results.
The integration of Aryel’s creative expertise is not merely about enhancing ad formats; it’s about fundamentally changing how advertisers perceive and engage with programmatic advertising. By offering visually compelling and interactive experiences, Onetag aims to demystify programmatic for brands that may have previously found it complex or opaque. This, in turn, can lead to increased investment in programmatic channels and a deeper appreciation for the value proposition offered by sophisticated SSPs and curation platforms.
The industry is increasingly moving towards a more unified advertising ecosystem where creative, data, and programmatic execution are tightly integrated. Onetag’s acquisition of Aryel positions it at the forefront of this evolution, demonstrating a clear commitment to innovation and value creation for its partners. As Onetag rolls out its AI-based deal optimization engine later this month, the enhanced creative capabilities provided by Aryel will be instrumental in training and optimizing these advanced algorithms, promising more intelligent and effective programmatic campaigns for the future. The strategic consolidation reflects a maturing ad tech industry where differentiation through specialized capabilities, rather than broad reach alone, is becoming the key to sustained success.
