Telly Unlocks Programmatic Advertising on Smart TV Home Screens, Pushing for Industry Standards

Telly, the innovative startup that offers consumers free smart televisions in exchange for data and advertising exposure, is making a significant strategic move by opening up its home screen ad inventory to programmatic buying. This initiative, coupled with a proactive push for industry-wide standardization, aims to attract a larger volume of advertising spend and solidify its unique position in the connected TV (CTV) landscape.

The company’s distinctive smart TV model features a secondary, narrower screen positioned below the main viewing area. This "second screen" serves a continuous stream of news and advertisements, including dynamic, programmatically purchased ads that appear directly on the home screen. Telly leverages Magnite’s SpringServe ad server for ad delivery, with demand originating from key players in the programmatic ecosystem such as The Trade Desk and Teads.

While programmatic home screen advertising is not an entirely new concept, Telly’s approach emphasizes the crucial need for scale and standardization to truly unlock its potential. Mike Shehan, Telly’s Chief Revenue Officer and a former CEO of SpotX, a video supply-side platform acquired by Magnite for $1.17 billion in 2021, articulated this necessity in a recent interview. He highlighted that for home screen ads to gain traction and justify advertiser investment, they must be readily available and measurable through programmatic channels, thereby facilitating broader reach and more efficient campaign management.

Pioneering Programmatic Home Screen Advertising

Telly is not the sole entity venturing into programmatic home screen advertising. Ad tech platform Nexxen, for instance, made its native home screen ad inventory programmatically available across a growing portfolio of TV manufacturers, including V (formerly VIDAA) and TiVo, as early as last year. Similarly, supply-side platforms (SSPs) like Magnite have been offering programmatic access to other ad formats, such as pause ads, for a considerable period.

However, Telly is differentiating itself by actively collaborating with the IAB Tech Lab, a prominent standards body for the digital advertising industry. This partnership is focused on developing standardized specifications for home screen ads within the bidstream. The IAB Tech Lab concluded its public comment period for proposed spec updates at the end of June 2026 and finalized these crucial signal updates in July, signaling a significant step towards industry-wide interoperability and clarity for this emerging ad format. Shehan indicated that Telly’s direct involvement in this process underscores its commitment to fostering a robust and scalable environment for home screen advertising.

Leveraging Data for Enhanced Targeting and Performance

A key differentiator for Telly, according to Shehan, lies in the rich first-party customer data it collects and the unique capabilities of its second-screen interface. When consumers sign up to receive a Telly device, they undergo a comprehensive onboarding process that includes a detailed questionnaire. This survey delves deeply into demographic information, household composition, income levels, and lifestyle choices, encompassing brand preferences, insurance providers, vehicle ownership (including make, model, and ownership status), and even leisure activities.

This extensive data collection, Shehan explained, goes "very deep on demographics, lifestyle, and brand loyalty." When combined with Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) data, which tracks the content viewers are consuming on the main screen, Telly can achieve a level of targeting precision that is difficult to match. For example, insurance providers could target households actively researching new policies or those exhibiting specific driving habits inferred from content consumption. This granular understanding of the audience allows Telly to offer advertisers highly relevant placements, potentially leading to improved campaign effectiveness and higher conversion rates.

The second screen itself is more than just a conduit for data collection; it’s a strategic advertising real estate. Because it can display content independently of the main television program, Telly can serve ads without interrupting the primary viewing experience. This means advertisers can reach consumers even when they are opting for ad-free streaming services on the main screen, effectively expanding the addressable audience for advertisers who might otherwise be excluded.

Beyond Standard Formats: Exploring Extended Ad Durations

In addition to its programmatic offerings, Telly is also exploring premium advertising opportunities through longer-form home screen ads, with durations of up to five minutes. These extended placements are currently available via private marketplace (PMP) deals facilitated through Magnite. Shehan believes that the combination of a longer ad duration and the non-intrusive nature of the home screen placement fosters greater viewer engagement.

An illustrative example cited by Shehan involved a streaming service, the identity of which Telly declined to disclose, that achieved a fivefold increase in app opens using a five-minute home screen ad compared to a two-minute version. This suggests that when consumers are not actively engaged with the main content, a longer, potentially more informative or narrative-driven ad on the second screen can be highly effective in capturing attention and driving desired actions.

Industry Endorsement and Future Outlook

The potential of home screen advertising is not lost on media buyers. Mike Treon, Head of CTV and Video Strategy at PMG, expressed optimism about Telly’s strategy. "The home screen has always been a powerful front door for us to engage viewers," Treon stated. "Telly extends that opportunity, giving brands a persistent presence that enhances engagement." This sentiment from a key industry player suggests a growing recognition of the home screen as a valuable advertising frontier, moving beyond traditional banner ads or pop-ups.

The success of Telly’s programmatic home screen initiative will ultimately hinge on its ability to translate this initial enthusiasm into sustained, long-term investment from advertisers. The company’s commitment to standardization through industry bodies like the IAB Tech Lab is a critical step in building advertiser confidence. By providing clear guidelines and measurable metrics, Telly aims to mitigate some of the fragmentation and uncertainty that has historically plagued the CTV advertising space.

The Broader Implications for Connected TV Advertising

Telly’s strategic pivot towards programmatic home screen advertising has several broader implications for the CTV ecosystem:

  • Innovation in Ad Formats: This move signals a continued drive for innovative ad formats within CTV, moving beyond the limitations of traditional linear TV advertising. The second screen offers a novel canvas for advertisers to experiment with more engaging and less disruptive ad experiences.
  • Data Monetization Evolution: Telly’s model represents an evolution in how consumer data is monetized. By offering free hardware in exchange for data, the company creates a virtuous cycle where rich data fuels more precise advertising, which in turn can command higher CPMs (cost per mille, or cost per thousand impressions).
  • Standardization as a Catalyst: The emphasis on working with the IAB Tech Lab underscores the critical role of standardization in the growth of programmatic CTV. Clearer ad specifications, measurement standards, and transparency are essential for attracting larger budgets and ensuring advertiser confidence.
  • Competition and Market Dynamics: Telly’s approach introduces a new competitive dynamic in the CTV ad market. By offering a unique value proposition (free TVs) and a distinct ad inventory, it challenges existing players and may encourage further innovation in hardware and advertising models.
  • Consumer Value Proposition: For consumers, the trade-off involves providing data and viewing ads in exchange for a free smart TV. The long-term success of this model will depend on whether consumers perceive this exchange as fair and valuable, and whether the advertising experience remains engaging rather than intrusive.

As the CTV landscape continues to mature, companies like Telly are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in advertising. The success of their programmatic home screen strategy could pave the way for a more integrated and data-driven advertising experience across a wider range of connected devices, ultimately reshaping how brands connect with audiences in the living room. The coming months and years will be crucial in determining whether Telly’s ambitious vision for the future of TV advertising gains widespread adoption and translates into significant market impact.
