AI’s Rise in Content Creation: A Copywriting Veteran’s Perspective on Adaptation and Evolution

Neville Medhora, a prominent figure in the world of copywriting and digital marketing education, is challenging the prevailing sentiment among many content professionals who dismiss AI-generated text as inherently inferior to human output. With decades of experience shaping persuasive marketing messages, Medhora asserts that artificial intelligence has reached a remarkable level of sophistication, capable of producing content that is "95% as good as human writing, even for the most complicated work." This perspective, shared in a recent conversation with Eric Bandholz of Practical Ecommerce, signals a significant shift in how seasoned marketers are approaching the rapidly evolving landscape of AI-powered content generation.

Medhora, the founder of Swipe File, a curated repository of promotional content designed to inspire marketers, and previously the architect of Kopywriting Kourse, a renowned instructional platform, acknowledges that embracing AI’s capabilities requires a significant mental adjustment for many in the industry. "It’s a hard pill to swallow, but you’ve got to adapt," he stated, emphasizing the imperative for professionals to evolve alongside technological advancements. His prior appearance on Bandholz’s podcast in 2018 predates the current widespread AI integration, making his insights on its impact on content creation particularly timely and valuable.

The Evolving Capabilities of AI in Content Generation

Medhora’s journey into the world of copywriting began long before the advent of advanced AI. He established himself as a freelance copywriter, publisher, and instructor, building a reputation for his expertise in crafting compelling marketing materials. His flagship educational product, Kopywriting Kourse, was a significant financial success for years, underscoring his deep understanding of effective communication strategies.

The emergence of AI has, in Medhora’s view, fundamentally altered the barriers to entry for content creation. "With AI, you don’t really have to learn copywriting," he explained. "Initially, the results were pretty good; then they improved. AI is now better than what most people can produce." He draws a stark comparison: while he can still craft an article superior to AI output, it requires a significant time investment of at least three hours. In contrast, AI can achieve 95%, and in some instances, 100% of that quality, while generating a multitude of variations at an unprecedented speed. "AI can be 95% as good, maybe even 100%, and it can produce 50 versions," he noted.

However, Medhora maintains a clear distinction for his own personal brand. "But my own newsletter and copy are 100% human," he clarified, suggesting a nuanced approach where AI serves as a powerful tool for efficiency and scale, while human oversight and personal voice remain paramount for highly curated content.

Navigating the AI-Driven Communication Landscape

The impact of AI on daily communication, particularly in professional contexts, is palpable. Bandholz shared his personal experience, observing, "I don’t receive a cold email anymore that isn’t AI. I can sniff it out as plain as day. It turns me off." This sentiment highlights a growing consumer awareness and a potential backlash against inauthentic or easily identifiable AI-generated outreach.

Medhora, however, approaches AI with a long-term perspective, having closely monitored its development. "I’ve followed AI for a long time. It keeps evolving, and it’s based on humans and how we learn," he said. He believes that with the right algorithmic structures, AI can effectively emulate human cognitive processes. "With the right formula, it can emulate a human brain. I don’t see what’s controversial or weird about that."

He categorizes writing tasks into three tiers: easy, medium, and hard. "AI solves easy writing, such as generating a headline for this episode based on the transcript," he explained. Examples of "medium writing" include generating email updates for e-commerce stores. The most challenging category, "hard writing," is exemplified by high-level thought leadership, such as venture capitalist Mark Andreessen’s commentary on business and the world. Even in these complex scenarios, Medhora estimates AI is already "95% there."

The application of AI extends beyond text. Medhora notes its impact on visual content: "My Instagram posts used to produce really crappy results. Now AI makes good images, good posts with pretty good results." This evolution has led him to question the widespread apprehension surrounding AI. "I’m not sure why people are so afraid of it."

Adaptation as a Core Strategy for Content Professionals

As a creative professional himself, Medhora admits that AI’s initial emergence presented a challenge. "Initially AI stung for a while. Then I regrouped." His strategic shift involves leveraging AI to amplify his output. Instead of writing a single email for a client, he now envisions the possibility of generating "thousands." This exemplifies a fundamental adaptation: viewing AI not as a replacement, but as a powerful force multiplier.

The notion of adaptation is central to Medhora’s message. "It’s a hard pill to swallow for some people, but you’ve got to adapt," he reiterated. This sentiment aligns with predictions about future workforce skills. Bandholz anticipates that "an essential skill in 2026 is tweaking and massaging AI copy," suggesting that human intervention will remain crucial for refining AI-generated content to meet specific quality and authenticity standards.

Transparency in AI usage is also becoming increasingly important for building trust with audiences. Medhora observes, "I don’t think people mind AI writing, but they do mind being fooled into thinking it’s from a human." To address this, he practices transparency in his own work: "At the beginning of my newsletters, I say it’s 100% human-written, with AI help for the images. People like that transparency." He further emphasizes that while AI-generated articles can be good, they possess a distinct quality. "AI-generated articles can be good, but they’re different from my style. I recognize and adjust it for important pieces."

A Comparative Look at AI Language Models

When it comes to specific AI models for writing, Medhora adopts a pragmatic approach, utilizing multiple platforms to leverage their distinct strengths. "No, not just one. I use ChatGPT and Gemini a lot," he stated. For more provocative or unfiltered outputs, he favors Grok, describing it as "a little more unhinged." Perplexity is used as a benchmarking tool to evaluate other models.

His assessment of writing-focused AI models is that they are largely comparable, with significant advancements occurring in rapid succession. "For writing, the platforms are all roughly the same, within three months of each other." However, he notes a more pronounced divergence in image and video generation capabilities. "For images and video, there are very real differences. ChatGPT Image 2.5 is vastly better than 2.0, which was much better than Google’s Nano Banana."

Bandholz shares his preference for Grok for general chat and even its image generation capabilities. However, he, too, hasn’t observed significant differences from an editing perspective. His current strategy involves implementing an AI-generated SEO approach, with the explicit goal of optimizing content for search engine algorithms rather than human readers. "I’m implementing an AI-generated SEO strategy and content. I don’t want a single human to read it, just other robots."

This robotic optimization strategy aligns with the evolving focus of SEO conferences. Medhora notes, "I’m going to Ahrefs’ SEO conference in a month. It’s the big topic – SEO, GEO, AEO, whatever you call it." The core question, he suggests, is how to disseminate vast amounts of content across various formats – video, audio, text, images – in a way that AI models can effectively process. This mirrors traditional SEO objectives, where the accumulation of links was a primary indicator of success. "How do you spread a lot of content across the internet so AI models can scrape it? That seems to be your strategy. It’s a lot like traditional SEO where the goal is more links."

Swipe File: A Hub for Marketing Inspiration

Beyond his commentary on AI, Medhora discussed his current venture, Swipe File. He described the website as "beautiful" and explained its function: "Swipe File feeds my newsletter. I find stuff, post it, and include it in the newsletter. I post about three items per day. The idea is to inspire marketers." The platform offers a wealth of advertising examples, accessible through an ads sidebar, providing a direct source of inspiration for marketing campaigns.

A key feature of Swipe File is its "Remix" tool. This innovative feature allows users to input their website URL, enabling the AI to analyze the site’s content and subsequently generate tailored content ideas. "Enter your URL, such as Beardbrand.com, and Remix learns your website and sends you tailored content ideas." Medhora highlighted the affordability and value of Remix, stating, "Remix costs just $200 per year. It’s a great value."
