PubMatic Bets on Agentic AI Amidst Industry Inflection Point and Revenue Dip

PubMatic, a leading Supply-Side Platform (SSP), has declared that both its company and the broader digital advertising industry are standing at a critical inflection point. The company is placing its strategic future on the transformative power of agentic artificial intelligence, a bold move underscored by its recent fourth-quarter 2025 earnings report. Despite a year-over-year revenue decline, PubMatic executives framed the results as a testament to their strategic resilience and forward-looking vision, particularly their early and aggressive adoption of agentic AI technologies.

The company reported $80 million in revenue for the fourth quarter of 2025, a 6% decrease compared to the same period in the previous year. For the full fiscal year 2025, PubMatic’s revenue stood at $282.9 million, marking a 3% year-over-year decline. However, these figures surpassed the company’s own revenue projections, a detail that seemed to resonate positively with investors. In after-hours trading following the earnings call, PubMatic’s stock price saw an increase of approximately 6%, suggesting investor confidence in the company’s long-term strategy despite the short-term revenue dip.

Navigating Revenue Challenges and Strategic Diversification

PubMatic’s Chief Financial Officer, Steve Pantelick, attributed the full-year revenue performance to a period of decreased spending from a significant, unnamed incumbent Demand-Side Platform (DSP). While the specific identity of this partner remains undisclosed, industry speculation, hinted at by the original report with a pointed "cough," points towards The Trade Desk. This partner’s decision to classify all SSPs as resellers in August 2025, leading to a shift in spending towards their own direct-to-publisher connections like OpenPath, has demonstrably impacted PubMatic’s financials.

To counteract the impact of this concentrated dependency, PubMatic has been actively diversifying its DSP base. The company is forging new partnerships with mid-tier DSPs, which are characterized by their growth potential and increased flexibility in ad spend. This strategic recalibration aims to reduce reliance on a few dominant players and build a more robust and resilient ecosystem.

The Agentic AI Imperative: A Glimpse into the Future of Advertising

PubMatic’s Chief Executive Officer, Rajeev Goel, articulated a powerful vision for the future, predicting that agentic AI will revolutionize digital advertising. He forecast that by 2028, an estimated 25% of all digital advertising transactions will be executed autonomously through agentic AI, with this share projected to expand to 50% by 2030. This ambitious outlook underscores PubMatic’s commitment to positioning itself at the forefront of this technological wave.

The company’s strategic investments in agentic AI are already bearing fruit. PubMatic’s proprietary platform, AgenticOS, has seen significant adoption. Coupled with robust demand in Connected TV (CTV) and mobile advertising, and a resurgence in display advertising, Goel expressed confidence that PubMatic’s business is poised for double-digit growth in the latter half of the current year.

PubMatic’s proactive engagement with agentic AI extends beyond its internal development. The company is a key participant in the creation of the Ad Context Protocol, an initiative aimed at bringing greater clarity and efficiency to agentic ad demand. This collaborative approach signifies PubMatic’s dedication to shaping industry standards and fostering a more intelligent advertising ecosystem.

Since launching its first agent-executed CTV campaign in January, in collaboration with the advertising agency Butler/Till, PubMatic has successfully executed over 250 agentic ad campaigns. A notable aspect of these campaigns is the involvement of new advertisers on PubMatic’s platform, indicating that agentic solutions are not only optimizing existing relationships but also attracting incremental revenue.

Furthermore, PubMatic has introduced a new revenue stream through AgenticOS. The company levies additional fees for campaigns managed by its agentic AI platform, distinct from its standard SSP take rate. This model mirrors the success of its Activate direct-to-buyer connection, which also generates supplementary revenue, thereby expanding PubMatic’s financial base beyond its core margins.

To accelerate the adoption of its AI technologies, PubMatic launched an AI accelerator program. This initiative has garnered significant interest, with nearly 100 brands, agencies, and streaming platforms already signing up. Goel proudly declared this to be "the fastest early-stage adoption of any product we’ve launched," highlighting the industry’s keen interest in and readiness for AI-driven solutions.

The Evolving DSP Landscape: A Strategic Realignment

Beyond the transformative potential of agentic AI, the evolving dynamics of PubMatic’s relationships with its DSP partners emerged as another prominent theme during the earnings call. The company’s 2025 financial performance was undeniably influenced by The Trade Desk’s strategic pivot. By reclassifying SSPs as resellers, The Trade Desk encouraged a migration of ad spend towards its OpenPath initiative, which bypasses SSPs and establishes direct connections with publishers. This move has intensified the competitive pressure on SSPs, forcing them to adapt and innovate.

Both Goel and Pantelick alluded to the impact of a significant unnamed DSP partner on PubMatic’s Q3 revenue, noting that spend from this platform stabilized around August and September. Pantelick provided a crucial analytical insight: excluding the impact of this specific DSP and the temporary surge in political ad spend in 2024, PubMatic’s revenue would have seen an impressive 18% year-over-year increase in Q4 and a 9% increase for the full year 2025. This data point emphasizes the underlying strength of PubMatic’s core business when insulated from specific market disruptions.

PubMatic’s growth strategy, outlined as a five-point plan, places the diversification of its DSP mix at the forefront. The company is actively courting mid-tier and specialist platforms, recognizing their significant growth potential. PubMatic has onboarded approximately 50 new DSP partners and has strategically reshaped its relationships with its largest DSPs, prioritizing those with strong performance in high-value verticals such as pharmaceuticals and fast-growing commerce sectors.

A significant indicator of the intensifying competition between major players like Amazon and The Trade Desk is the emergence of Amazon DSP as one of PubMatic’s top-five buyers. This development suggests a broader industry trend of diversification among large buyers seeking optimal reach and efficiency across various platforms.

The financial impact of this strategic shift is already evident. Ad spend from mid-market DSPs surged by 30% year-over-year in Q4, according to Pantelick. He further highlighted that advertisers represented by these mid-market DSPs constitute the "fastest-growing segment of the market," underscoring the strategic importance of cultivating these relationships.

PubMatic’s Five-Point Growth Plan: A Holistic Approach

PubMatic’s strategic vision for sustained growth is encapsulated in its comprehensive five-point plan.

  1. Activate Direct-to-Buyer Business: The company’s Activate platform, which facilitates direct connections between buyers and publishers, has experienced exponential growth. In Q4, this business segment tripled in size. Supply-path optimization, a key component facilitated by Activate, accounted for a substantial 55% of all activity on PubMatic’s platform in 2025, demonstrating the increasing demand for transparent and efficient supply chains.

  2. Continued Growth in CTV, Mobile, and Emerging Revenue Streams: PubMatic is capitalizing on the sustained growth in these critical channels. Excluding the impact of 2024 political advertising, PubMatic’s CTV revenue experienced a remarkable 50% year-over-year increase in Q4. Mobile app growth was also robust, rising by 25% during the same quarter. Emerging revenue streams, which encompass Activate, commerce media, and new AI solutions, saw a 75% surge in Q4 and now contribute nearly 10% of PubMatic’s total revenue.

  3. Legacy Display Advertising Resilience: Despite the industry’s focus on newer formats, PubMatic’s foundational display advertising business demonstrated healthy growth, increasing by 20% in Q4. This indicates a sustained demand for traditional digital advertising formats and PubMatic’s ability to effectively monetize them.

  4. Emerging AI Solutions: This point emphasizes PubMatic’s commitment to developing and deploying innovative AI-powered products for its publisher partners. These solutions are designed to enhance publisher capabilities, optimize ad inventory, and unlock new monetization opportunities.

  5. Internal AI Optimizations: PubMatic is also leveraging AI to enhance its internal operations and development processes. The company reported that 40% of its new code generated in the latter half of 2025 was AI-assisted. This internal adoption of AI signifies a commitment to efficiency and innovation across all facets of the business.

Currently, 10% of PubMatic’s publishers are generating revenue from AI solutions, including AgenticOS and other publisher-facing products. Goel expressed his ambition to see this number reach 100% eventually, stating, "We’re still early, and there’s a lot of runway ahead of us." This forward-looking perspective highlights PubMatic’s strategic intent to fully integrate AI into its offerings and operational framework, positioning itself as a leader in the next era of digital advertising. The company’s proactive approach to agentic AI, coupled with its strategic diversification and focus on key growth areas, suggests a deliberate and well-charted course for navigating the complexities and opportunities of the evolving ad tech landscape.
