Telly Unlocks Programmatic Potential for Smart TV Home Screen Advertising, Championing Industry Standards

In a strategic move to capture a larger share of the burgeoning connected TV (CTV) advertising market, Telly, the innovative startup known for distributing free smart TVs in exchange for user data and ad exposure, has announced its home screen advertising inventory is now available for programmatic buying. This development, coupled with Telly’s proactive engagement with industry bodies to establish standardized ad formats, signals a significant push to attract substantial brand investment in this novel advertising channel.

The Telly smart TV experience is distinguished by its unique dual-screen design. While the main display showcases viewer content, a secondary, narrower screen positioned below runs a continuous stream of curated news and advertisements. It is within this secondary screen that Telly’s programmatic home screen ads are displayed. The company leverages Magnite’s SpringServe ad server for ad delivery, with demand originating from prominent platforms like The Trade Desk and Teads, among others. This integration allows for the automated buying and selling of ad space, a crucial step for achieving the necessary scale to make home screen advertising a viable and attractive option for brands.

Mike Shehan, Telly’s Chief Revenue Officer and a former CEO of the video supply-side platform SpotX, which was acquired by Magnite for a substantial $1.17 billion in 2021, emphasized the critical role of programmatic enablement in achieving scale for Telly’s home screen ads. "For home screen ads to truly gain traction and deliver on their promise, they require significant reach and efficient delivery," Shehan stated in an interview with AdExchanger. "Programmatic buying is the key to unlocking that scale, allowing brands to access our audience in a highly efficient and targeted manner."

While Telly is not the first entrant to offer programmatic home screen advertising, its approach is marked by a deliberate effort to foster industry-wide standardization. Ad tech platforms such as Nexxen have already made their native home screen ads programmatically available across various TV manufacturers, including V (formerly VIDAA) and TiVo. Similarly, Supply-Side Platforms (SSPs) like Magnite have been facilitating programmatic access to ad formats such as pause ads for some time.

However, Telly is differentiating itself by actively collaborating with the IAB Tech Lab, a global consortium dedicated to digital advertising standards and best practices. Telly’s engagement has focused on developing standardized specifications for home screen ads within the bidstream. The IAB Tech Lab concluded its public comment period for proposed spec updates at the end of June, and subsequently finalized these signal updates in July. This collaborative effort aims to ensure that Telly’s home screen ad inventory adheres to recognized industry standards, thereby increasing buyer confidence and simplifying the integration process for advertisers and their agencies.

Shehan further asserted that Telly’s unique value proposition extends beyond programmatic access. The company’s proprietary second screen, coupled with its direct access to rich first-party customer data, provides a distinct advantage in targeting home screen ads and driving measurable business outcomes. This combination of technology and data is seen as a powerful differentiator in the increasingly competitive CTV landscape.

The "Go Big or Go Home Screen" Strategy: Leveraging Data for Precision Advertising

The foundation of Telly’s data-driven approach is laid during the initial setup process for its smart TVs. Prospective users are required to complete an extensive questionnaire, providing detailed demographic and lifestyle information. This includes data points such as household income, the number of individuals residing in the home, and crucially, information related to brand preferences, insurance providers, vehicle ownership (including make, model, and ownership status – leased or owned).

"The questionnaire dives very deep into demographics, lifestyle, and brand loyalty," Shehan explained. This comprehensive dataset, when integrated with Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) data – which tracks the content viewers are consuming on the main screen – enables highly precise targeting capabilities. For instance, Telly can identify and target households actively researching new insurance policies, offering a direct pathway for insurance providers to reach a relevant and engaged audience. This level of granular targeting is a significant draw for advertisers seeking to optimize their ad spend and improve return on investment (ROI).

The secondary screen is not merely a passive data collection interface; it’s an active advertising canvas. Its ability to operate independently of the main screen allows Telly to serve ads without interrupting the primary viewing experience. This means advertisers can reach consumers even when they are opting for ad-free streaming services, a segment of the market that has traditionally been difficult to access with traditional advertising models. The non-disruptive nature of the home screen placement ensures that viewers are exposed to advertisements in a less intrusive manner, potentially leading to higher recall and positive brand association.

Expanding Ad Formats and Demonstrating Impact

Beyond programmatic enablement, Telly is also exploring longer-form ad opportunities. The company is offering home screen ads of up to five minutes in duration, available through private marketplace deals facilitated by Magnite. Shehan highlighted the potential of these longer formats, particularly when combined with the inherently non-disruptive placement. He believes this synergy is conducive to fostering deeper viewer engagement.

To illustrate this point, Shehan cited an example involving a streaming service (which Telly chose not to name). This partner reportedly achieved a five-fold increase in app opens by utilizing a five-minute home screen ad compared to a two-minute version. This data point suggests that when the content is compelling and the context is right, longer ad formats can indeed drive significant user action.

This sentiment is echoed by media buyers who recognize the strategic value of the home screen. Mike Treon, Head of CTV and Video Strategy at PMG, commented, "The home screen has always been a powerful front door for us to engage viewers. Telly extends that opportunity, giving brands a persistent presence that enhances engagement." Treon’s statement underscores the perceived potential of Telly’s offering to provide a consistent and impactful brand presence within the user’s primary media environment.

The Road Ahead: Standardization and Sustained Investment

The success of Telly’s programmatic home screen advertising initiative hinges on its ability to translate this initial enthusiasm into sustained, long-term investment from brands and agencies. The company’s commitment to industry standardization through collaboration with the IAB Tech Lab is a crucial step in building trust and predictability in this nascent advertising channel. By adhering to established protocols, Telly aims to streamline the buying process and provide advertisers with the confidence that their investments will be managed efficiently and effectively.

The broader implications of Telly’s strategy extend to the entire CTV advertising ecosystem. As more platforms explore innovative advertising models that leverage unique user experiences and data, the industry will likely see a diversification of ad formats and targeting capabilities. The success of initiatives like Telly’s could pave the way for increased programmatic adoption across a wider range of CTV inventory, further democratizing access to this valuable advertising medium.

The free TV model, while offering a compelling value proposition to consumers, also presents a unique challenge for advertisers. The success of this model relies on the ability to generate substantial revenue through advertising. Telly’s focus on programmatic buying and standardization suggests a mature understanding of the advertising market’s demands and a strategic effort to overcome potential adoption hurdles.

As the CTV landscape continues to evolve, Telly’s proactive approach to innovation, data utilization, and industry collaboration positions it as a significant player to watch. The company’s ability to demonstrate a clear ROI for advertisers, coupled with its ongoing efforts to refine and standardize its advertising products, will be critical in shaping the future of home screen advertising and its role within the broader digital media economy. The convergence of unique hardware, proprietary data, and programmatic accessibility represents a compelling new frontier for advertisers seeking to connect with audiences in the living room.
