Shopify Positions Itself as the Backbone of Agentic AI Commerce

During Shopify’s second-quarter earnings call with analysts, President Harley Finkelstein articulated a bold vision for the e-commerce giant, declaring that the platform and its extensive ecosystem are "well-suited to this agentic era" of artificial intelligence (AI). This statement signals a proactive and strategic embrace of AI’s transformative potential, positioning Shopify not merely as a facilitator of online sales, but as a foundational infrastructure provider for the next generation of commerce driven by intelligent agents. Finkelstein’s remarks, delivered against a backdrop of increasing AI integration across various digital spheres, underscored Shopify’s two-year investment in refining its search index, a critical component for enabling AI-driven product discovery.

The core of Shopify’s AI strategy, as outlined by Finkelstein, lies in its meticulously curated product catalog. For two decades, the platform has amassed and processed commerce data from over a billion products. This vast repository of information has been systematically distilled and structured to serve as an authoritative source of truth for AI-powered product discovery. Finkelstein emphasized that this enriched catalog allows merchants to seamlessly connect their product listings to large language models (LLMs). This integration empowers AI agents to not only find but also understand and recommend products with a level of nuance and accuracy previously unattainable. The implications are significant: brands hosted on Shopify are becoming directly shoppable within advanced conversational AI platforms, including widely recognized interfaces like ChatGPT.

Shopify’s approach is characterized by its commitment to making merchant data universally accessible to any AI partner. "It structures merchants’ product data so every and any AI partner can access it directly, giving agents the ability to discover, understand and recommend our merchants’ products," Finkelstein explained. This structured data approach is proving to be a significant differentiator. Early data shared by Shopify indicates that AI searches powered by its "Catalog" system convert at twice the rate of those relying on less structured, scraped data. The reason, Finkelstein elaborated, is the completeness, accuracy, and contextual relevance of the product information presented to consumers at the precise moment they are ready to make a purchase. This direct pipeline of high-quality data ensures that AI recommendations are not only relevant but also actionable, driving higher conversion rates for merchants.

The scale of Shopify’s influence in the e-commerce landscape is substantial. According to Digital Commerce 360 data, in 2025, over 115 of the Top 2000 online retailers in North America leverage Shopify as their primary e-commerce platform. The collective web sales generated by these leading retailers utilizing Shopify’s infrastructure in 2025 reached an impressive $10.458 billion. The Top 2000 Database, a comprehensive ranking of North America’s largest online retailers based on annual e-commerce sales, highlights Shopify’s critical role in powering a significant portion of the region’s digital commerce.

Shopify’s Strategic Integrations Fueling Agentic AI Expansion

Shopify’s ambition to lead in the agentic AI era is further demonstrated by its strategic collaborations with leading technology companies. Finkelstein specifically mentioned ongoing partnerships with giants such as OpenAI, Google, Meta, and Microsoft, all focused on advancing the future of e-commerce. These alliances are crucial for ensuring that Shopify’s infrastructure remains at the forefront of AI development and integration.

Beyond these high-level partnerships, Shopify has actively developed connectors to a diverse array of AI agents. Its AI toolkit now includes integrations with prominent agents such as Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Manus, Replit, and Vercel. This broad compatibility ensures that merchants on the Shopify platform can benefit from the capabilities of a wide range of AI tools, enhancing their reach and engagement with consumers.

Finkelstein articulated Shopify’s philosophy of open innovation: "We build the primitives, we open them up, and we let the best developers and the best companies in the world build on top of us." This approach fosters a dynamic ecosystem where third-party innovators can leverage Shopify’s foundational technologies to create new and enhanced e-commerce experiences. The ultimate goal, as he stated, is to ensure that "whether commerce is handled by humans or agents, whether stores are built by people or AI, Shopify runs underneath it all." This vision positions Shopify as an indispensable, underlying layer of the entire digital commerce value chain, regardless of how it is orchestrated.

A key enabler of this future is Shopify’s development of the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP). Co-developed with Google, the UCP is an open standard designed to facilitate seamless interaction between AI systems and merchant checkout flows. This protocol allows AI agents to connect directly to a merchant’s checkout process and complete transactions within conversational interfaces, thereby streamlining the path to purchase for consumers interacting with AI. Finkelstein noted that due to Shopify’s robust infrastructure, each of its merchants is inherently "UCP-ready," preparing them for the seamless integration of agentic commerce.

In line with its strategic focus on AI, Shopify introduced a dedicated agentic section within its administrative interface during the quarter. This feature provides merchants with a centralized dashboard to manage their AI channels, monitor performance metrics, and receive actionable recommendations for improvement. "Merchants can manage AI channels, they can track performance, and they can get specific recommendations on what to improve, all from a single interface," Finkelstein stated. While acknowledging that the current volume of transactions through agentic commerce is still modest compared to Shopify’s overall Gross Merchandise Volume (GMV), Finkelstein highlighted the "impressive" growth trends, signaling strong future potential.

The Transformative Impact of AI Search on Shopify Merchants

The impact of AI-driven commerce is already being felt by Shopify merchants. Finkelstein reported that AI-driven traffic and orders to Shopify stores have experienced a remarkable tripling year-over-year in the second quarter. This surge indicates a significant shift in consumer behavior and discovery patterns.

Of particular note is the performance of new buyer orders generated through AI channels. These are arriving at nearly double the rate of other channels, suggesting that AI is not only capturing existing search volume but also attracting new customers to the platform. Finkelstein clarified that this growth is not coming at the expense of traditional search. In fact, he indicated that search remains one of the largest sources of buyer traffic for Shopify merchants and continues to grow. Traditional search sessions have increased by approximately 1.3 times over the past two years, still accounting for roughly one-third of all storefront sessions. This data suggests that AI is acting as a powerful complement to traditional search rather than a direct substitute, expanding the overall discovery funnel.

Early data further reveals that AI search is proving to be a significant boon for smaller brands, particularly those that constitute the "long tail" of commerce. These smaller businesses, often characterized by niche products and specialized customer bases, form the majority of Shopify’s merchant base. Finkelstein noted that AI search began to "disproportionately benefit the long tail" in 2025, a trend that has continued. This is evidenced by the fact that 75% of AI-attributable orders in the second quarter originated from categories outside of Shopify’s top 100 most popular categories. This indicates that AI’s ability to understand nuanced queries and connect consumers with less mainstream products is opening up new avenues for discovery and sales for smaller, specialized businesses.

Distinguishing Traditional Search from Agentic AI Discovery

The fundamental difference between traditional search engines and AI-powered agents lies in their approach to information retrieval and matching. Finkelstein drew a clear distinction: "While search engines rank by popularity against a handful of keywords, AI agents make multiple calls into Shopify’s Catalog, working with richer structured data to match products with the buyer’s specific intent rather than just keywords."

To illustrate this point, Finkelstein provided a concrete example. A consumer searching for a car seat specifically designed to fit in a sedan would receive vastly different results from traditional search versus an AI assistant. Traditional search, relying heavily on keywords, might simply return results for "car seat." In contrast, an AI assistant, empowered by Shopify’s structured data, can simultaneously consider a multitude of factors such as dimensions, vehicle type, and other specific constraints. This allows the AI to identify a product that not only matches the keywords but also functionally works for the user’s precise needs, moving beyond simple popularity-based ranking to deliver truly relevant solutions.

The efficiency of AI-driven shopping journeys is also evident in the shortened paths to purchase. Finkelstein reported that half of all AI-referred sessions land directly on a Product Detail Page (PDP). This is a remarkable 2.5 times higher rate than what Shopify observes from traditional search traffic. This direct path to product consideration suggests that AI agents are highly effective at understanding user intent early in the discovery process and guiding them efficiently towards specific items, thereby compressing the overall shopping journey and potentially increasing conversion rates.

The strategic investments in AI infrastructure and integrations, coupled with the growing adoption by merchants and the positive performance metrics, clearly indicate that Shopify is positioning itself as a central player in the evolving landscape of agentic AI commerce. By providing the foundational data and connectivity, Shopify aims to empower businesses of all sizes to thrive in an era where intelligent agents are increasingly becoming the primary interface for consumer discovery and purchasing. The platform’s commitment to an open ecosystem suggests a collaborative approach to shaping the future of e-commerce, ensuring its relevance and leadership as AI continues to redefine how consumers shop and how businesses operate.
