Stitch Fix announced a significant milestone in its strategic turnaround, returning to revenue growth in fiscal year 2026. The online styling retailer’s performance, marked by a 6.4% increase in net revenue to $1.35 billion for the fiscal year ended August 1, signals a strengthening of its operational foundation and a more engaging client experience. This achievement, detailed in the company’s fourth-quarter earnings call, also saw a considerable narrowing of its net loss, which decreased to $12.6 million from $28.8 million in the prior fiscal year. The fourth quarter of fiscal 2026 alone demonstrated a robust 4.2% year-over-year revenue increase, reaching $324.4 million, and extended Stitch Fix’s streak of positive revenue growth to six consecutive quarters.
"Fiscal 2026 was a pivotal year for Stitch Fix," stated CEO Matt Baer, addressing analysts. "We advanced our strategy and closed the year as a stronger, healthier business with a more resilient operating foundation and a reimagined client experience." This resurgence in revenue growth occurred despite a modest 1.4% year-over-year decrease in active clients, which stood at approximately 2.28 million at the close of the fourth quarter. This apparent contradiction is explained by a substantial 7.8% rise in revenue per active client, which reached a record $592. This indicates that while the company is serving fewer customers, those it is serving are spending significantly more, a key indicator of enhanced customer value and loyalty.
The company’s strategic focus on artificial intelligence (AI) is playing an increasingly central role in this revival. Baer highlighted the growing adoption of Stitch Fix’s proprietary Vision AI tool and its potential integration into agentic shopping environments. Stitch Fix currently ranks No. 78 in the Digital Commerce 360 Top 1000 Database, a comprehensive listing of North America’s largest online retailers, and has entered the new AI Rankings at No. 183, underscoring its commitment to technological advancement in e-commerce.
Stitch Fix Vision: AI-Powered Personalization Enhances Client Experience
A cornerstone of Stitch Fix’s renewed client engagement strategy is its AI-powered style visualization tool, Stitch Fix Vision, launched approximately a year prior. Leveraging 15 years of proprietary customer data and algorithms, combined with the expertise of its human stylists, the company has built a robust platform for integrating AI across both client interactions and operational efficiencies.
The Vision platform allows customers to upload photos, enabling the AI to generate personalized images of them wearing curated outfits. New styling suggestions are added to customer galleries weekly, providing a dynamic and continuously updated visual wardrobe. CEO Matt Baer emphasized the expanding integration of Vision throughout the entire shopping journey. Customers can now utilize the tool from the initial onboarding and Fix Preview stages through to the Freestyle shopping experience and even at checkout. This pervasive integration aims to demystify the styling process and boost customer confidence in their selections.
The impact of Vision on customer spending is particularly noteworthy. Clients who actively engage with the Vision platform have demonstrated a "significant lift" in their 90-day Freestyle spending, according to Baer. Since its inception, Stitch Fix has shared over 22 million Vision images with its customers, illustrating the scale of its adoption.
A recent enhancement, "See It On Me," represents a significant evolution of the Vision platform. This on-demand feature allows customers browsing outfit suggestions in Freestyle to instantly see how a chosen look would appear rendered on their own likeness, rather than waiting for new generated looks. Baer reported that Vision adoption has surpassed company expectations, and the "See It On Me" feature has been instrumental in driving further expansion and engagement. This technological leap not only personalizes the shopping experience but also addresses a critical pain point in online apparel retail: the inability to physically try on items.
The Future of Shopping: Stitch Fix’s Vision for AI and Agentic Commerce
As the retail landscape rapidly evolves with advancements in AI, Stitch Fix is strategically positioning itself to capitalize on these changes. Baer believes the company’s extensive proprietary customer data is a critical competitive advantage in this new era. "At the end of the day, an AI experience, generative or agentic, the quality of that output is premised on the quality of the data that you put into it," he explained, underscoring the value of Stitch Fix’s established data assets.
The emergence of agentic shopping, where AI systems can execute transactions and make purchasing decisions on behalf of consumers, is a trend Stitch Fix is actively monitoring and preparing for. Baer expressed confidence in the company’s ability to participate in this shift, envisioning a future where Stitch Fix can cater to both human customers and AI shopping agents. While specific details regarding the implementation of this strategy remain undisclosed, the underlying principle is clear: to offer personalized styling services that can be accessed and managed through advanced AI.
However, Baer also provided a nuanced perspective on the application of AI in purchasing decisions. He posited that while routine replenishment tasks, such as ensuring a pantry is stocked with essentials, are prime candidates for automation by agentic shoppers, the selection of clothing involves a higher degree of complexity. "Choosing clothes that fit, match someone’s style and budget and make them feel confident, involves a lot more nuance," he stated. This is where Stitch Fix’s human stylists remain a critical differentiator, providing a layer of personalized insight and emotional connection that AI, at its current stage, cannot fully replicate.
In an increasingly automated retail environment, Baer highlighted the growing value of human connection. "As more and more interactions for all consumers generally are taking place by AI, it is actually human connection that becomes the scarce resource," he remarked, suggesting that Stitch Fix’s hybrid model of AI augmentation and human expertise offers a unique and valuable proposition.
Beyond client-facing applications, Stitch Fix is also leveraging AI to optimize internal operations. Generative AI tools are now assisting human stylists in generating item recommendations, streamlining their workflow. In fulfillment centers, AI is employed for labor planning and real-time scheduling, enhancing operational efficiency. Furthermore, AI agents are handling a larger volume of routine customer service inquiries, leading to a more than twofold increase in the proportion of customer chats resolved without the need for additional human intervention.
The company has also bolstered its leadership in technology and product development with the recent appointment of Sree Sreedhararaj as Chief Product and Technology Officer. Sreedhararaj’s prior experience includes leading AI-powered personalization engines and agentic AI initiatives at Ipsy, as well as spearheading AI integration and personalization strategy at Sephora. His expertise is expected to be crucial in advancing Stitch Fix’s AI capabilities.
Increased Spending Per Client Fuels Revenue Growth
While the number of active clients saw a slight decline, the average spending per client has significantly increased, emerging as a primary driver of Stitch Fix’s revenue growth. Baer noted that this trend has been improving for nine consecutive quarters, indicating sustained customer value. The company attributes this rise in average spending to larger "fixes" (shipments of clothing and accessories) and a broader assortment of available items. This has consequently supported eight consecutive quarters of growth in both the number of items purchased per fix and the average unit retail price. The average order value (AOV) has been particularly instrumental in driving Q4 revenue growth.
Stitch Fix is also strategically expanding into product categories where it previously had a limited presence. Sales in activewear and athleisure, for instance, saw a substantial year-over-year increase of 21% in the fourth quarter, while footwear sales grew by 14%. This diversification of its product offering is aimed at capturing a wider segment of the apparel market and catering to evolving consumer preferences.
The company has also significantly expanded its brand portfolio, adding over 80 new brands since the beginning of fiscal 2026. These include popular names such as Birkenstock, Outdoor Voices, and FARM Rio. This expansion diversifies Stitch Fix’s market brand offerings alongside its in-house private labels, providing customers with a more comprehensive and appealing selection.
Navigating a Challenging Consumer Landscape: Fiscal 2027 Outlook
Despite the positive momentum in revenue growth and per-client spending, Stitch Fix executives have cautioned about a more challenging consumer environment in the near term. Chief Financial Officer David Aufderhaar pointed to elevated customer acquisition costs as a headwind, impacting the company’s ability to attract and re-engage clients. These costs are expected to persist into the first quarter of fiscal 2027 and are projected to exert pressure on client and revenue growth.
Furthermore, existing customers are exhibiting increased selectivity in their discretionary purchases outside of their recurring "Fixes." This trend, which began to emerge late in the fourth quarter, is anticipated to influence the company’s full-year financial outlook.
For the first quarter of fiscal 2027, Stitch Fix forecasts revenue to be between $323 million and $328 million. The projected revenue for the full fiscal year 2027 is estimated to range from $1.31 billion to $1.36 billion. Aufderhaar indicated that the fiscal 2027 EBITDA outlook also accounts for planned strategic investments in advertising and technology, including further AI development, to support long-term growth objectives. These investments are crucial for maintaining the company’s competitive edge in an increasingly AI-driven retail landscape.
