Rather than a single "announcement" meeting, developers are finding success when they establish advisory boards or hold series of smaller, informal neighborhood sessions. Without a robust stakeholder map, companies often find themselves reacting to misinformation or organized protests that could have been mitigated through transparency and early concessions.

In Pennsylvania, Governor Josh Shapiro recently signed an executive order regarding data center development that includes a significant emphasis on community outreach. As Feistman concludes, the job of the communicator is to "speak truth to power." This means providing leadership with the full context of a project—including local sentiment, media coverage, and community history. By being open and honest about the tradeoffs involved in building the infrastructure of the future, companies can move beyond the "problem of execution" and toward a model of sustainable, collaborative growth.

In the end, the data centers that power the 21st century cannot be built in a vacuum. They require land, water, and power—all of which belong to the public. To secure these resources, the industry must prove that it is not just a consumer of community assets, but a responsible and transparent partner in the community’s future.
